The Physical Stores Payment team at Amazon is seeking an experienced Software Development Manager to lead our innovative payment solutions that power Amazon's diverse retail formats, including Just Walk Out stores, Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, and other physical retail experiences. Our team is responsible for end-to-end payment technologies that enable payment acceptance, processor integrations, risk management, and shopper identity management across global markets for both Amazon-owned and third-party merchants.
As the Software Development Manager, you will lead a team that develops cloud-enabled and on-device payment services, focusing on creating seamless, secure, and scalable payment experiences. Your team will build solutions that handle everything from traditional payment methods and payments identity and fraud technologies, including the integration of generative AI for identity, payments and fraud use cases as well as payment agents that can intelligently manage complex transaction scenarios in physical retail environments.
The role requires a strategic thinker who can balance innovation with security and compliance, while adhering to our core tenet of "Accuracy and Safety over efficiency." You will collaborate with multiple stakeholders across Amazon's retail ecosystem to drive technical strategy and execution, ensuring our payment systems meet the evolving needs of our customers and merchants. Key job responsibilities
Drive technical strategy and execution for physical retail payment systems
Lead and mentor software engineering teams
Oversee development of payment services including acceptance, processing, and risk management
Guide architectural decisions for cloud and on-device payment solutions
Manage key vendor and stakeholder relationships
Drive integration of emerging payment technologies and AI capabilities
Establish testing strategies and quality standards
Own payment system KPIs and performance metrics
Participate in EMV certification, PCI and security compliance initiatives
Collaborate with product teams on roadmap and feature delivery
Maintain system monitoring and operational excellence standards
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

3+ years of engineering team management experience
7+ years of engineering experience
8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
Experience partnering with product or program management teams
Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
