About The Job:

• We're hiring a Senior Production DBA who lives at the intersection of precision and speed--owning Snowflake (our MPP backbone for Customer360, Article360, and all other master data & business data marts) and our SQL Server farm (15-20 servers) that will form the Operational Data Store feeding a real-time API stack (Java & Python).
• You'll tune long-running queries, prevent costly shuffles, harden HA/DR, and keep data flowing smoothly across AWS and Microsoft ecosystems. Retail experience is a plus

Essential Job Functions:
Snowflake Stewardship (MPP):

• Operate and optimize warehouses, scaling policies, resource monitors, tasks/streams, SnowPipe; enforce RBAC, masking & row access policies, object tagging, and auditing.
• Investigate query slowness using in-built tools like: QUERY_HISTORY, WAREHOUSE_LOAD_HISTORY, GET_QUERY_OPERATOR_STATS, and profile views; drive fixes for spills, skew, poor pruning, and high network bytes.
• Reduce cost & latency via clustering choices, micro-partition awareness, result cache strategy, and workload isolation (dev/test/prod).

SQL Server ODS (15-20 servers):

• Own HA/DR (Always On AGs), backup/restore strategy (full/diff/log), RPO/RTO adherence, index/partition strategies, filegroup layout, TempDB configuration.
• Troubleshoot live issues with Query Store, Extended Events, DMVs (sys.dm_exec_*, waits, plan cache), and tools like sp_WhoIsActive/SQL Sentry.
• Design for real-time API read patterns (connection pooling, read replicas, hot indexes, SLOs for p95/p99).

Performance engineering & firefighting:

• Triage long-running queries (e.g., TB-scale reshuffles from BI tools), eliminate Cartesian blow-ups, push selective filters early, and right-size warehouses.
• You will be part of Data Engineering and help other teams pre-aggregate or materialize heavy joins; codify repeatable fix-patterns.

Streaming & change data capture:

• Enable low-latency data flows via CDC/Change Tracking (SQL Server) and ingestion to Snowflake (Snowpipe, Streams/Tasks, Kafka/Debezium where applicable).
• Validate end-to-end freshness and reconcile API-facing SLAs.

Observability & incident response:

• Build dashboards/alerts (CloudWatch/Azure Monitor/Datadog) for queue times, spills, credits, CPU, I/O, waits, AG health, and API dependency health.
• Part of on-call rotations, run blameless postmortems, and track remediation to closure.

Security, compliance, and governance:

• Enforce least privilege, encryption, network policies/privatelink, audit trails; partner with Security on SOX/PII safeguards and data retention (Snowflake Time Travel/Fail-Safe, SQL Server retention policies).

Automation & DevOps:

• Infrastructure-as-Code for database objects and platform config (Terraform/Cloud Formation), CI/CD for schema changes, gated releases, and drift detection.
• Script the boring away (PowerShell, Python, Bash); create self-service runbooks for common ops.

Capacity & cost management:

• Forecast growth, manage warehouse/instance sizing, credits and licensing; propose right-tiering and reservation strategies.

Retail analytics partnership:

• Collaborate with BI/Analytics (e.g., MicroStrategy/Looker/Power BI) to shape SQL that prunes early, limits width, and aligns to clustering/join keys common in retail KPIs (traffic, conversion, basket, promo, returns).

AI-adjacent data readiness ( nice to have ):

• Support data reliability for Applied AI workloads (feature refresh SLAs, inference-safe schemas, guardrails for LLM-driven SQL generation, and performance baselines).
