Read and understand complex engineering and architectural drawings, sketches, and work specifications to determine project requirements, scope, and assembly sequences.
Material Selection and Preparation:
Select the appropriate type and gauge of sheet metal (e.g., steel, aluminum, copper) and non-metallic materials based on project specifications.
Measuring and Layout:
Accurately measure, mark dimensions, and lay out material using precision instruments like calipers, micrometers, scribes, and rulers to trace patterns for cutting and shaping.
Fabrication and Shaping:
Operate various light metalworking machines and tools, including shears, brakes, presses, saws, laser/plasma cutters, and drills, to cut, bend, punch, and form metal components to exact specifications.
Assembly and Joining:
Fit and join sheet metal parts using various techniques such as welding (MIG, TIG, etc.), bolting, riveting, and soldering.
Finishing:
Trim, file, grind, deburr, buff, or smooth surfaces and joints of assembled parts using hand and power tools to ensure a high-quality finish and safety.
Quality Control and Inspection:
Inspect finished products and installations for compliance with specifications, quality requirements, and structural integrity using measuring instruments.
Maintenance and Safety:
Perform routine maintenance on tools and equipment, maintain a clean and organized work area, and strictly adhere to company and industry safety standards (e.g., OSHA).
Documentation and Reporting:
Prepare reports of work completed, document material usage, and note any issues or deviations during the fabrication process.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Education:
A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required, with a professional certification or a relevant apprenticeship (e.g., in Sheet Metal Work) being highly desirable.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings.
Experience with various fabrication tools and machinery, including both manual and computer numerical control (CNC) equipment.
Knowledge of welding, soldering, and riveting techniques.
Strong mathematical skills for measuring, calculating angles, and material dimensions.
Computer literacy, including familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software where applicable.
