The Shadow Teacher will provide one-on-one support to a child with special needs within a mainstream preschool classroom. The goal is to enable the child's participation, learning, socialization, independence, and safety while collaborating closely with teachers, therapists, and parents.
Key Responsibilities:
Individualized Support
Provide constant, attentive support to the assigned child during school hours, including arrival, class time, transitions, play, meals, toileting routines, and dispersal.
Implement individualized strategies, accommodations, and behavior supports as per the child's IEP/assessment plan.
Encourage gradual independence by fading prompts and reinforcing positive behaviors.
Classroom Collaboration
Work alongside the class teacher to adapt activities, materials, and seating to support participation.
Facilitate inclusion in group activities, circle time, music, art, outdoor play, and field trips.
Support classroom routines without disrupting overall class flow.
Behavior and Sensory Support
Monitor triggers and early signs of dysregulation; use proactive strategies and de-escalation techniques.
Implement behavior intervention plans consistently (e.g., first-then strategies, token systems, calm corner).
Offer sensory breaks and tools (fidgets, weighted lap pads, movement breaks) as guided by therapists.
Communication and Documentation
Maintain daily notes on the child's participation, behavior, goals, and strategies used.
Provide brief end-of-day feedback to parents and weekly updates to the preschool coordinator.
Participate in IEP/Student Support Team meetings and share observations.
Escalate concerns promptly and maintain confidentiality at all times.
Learning Support
Reinforce pre-academic skills (pre-literacy, numeracy, fine motor, communication).
Use play-based and visual learning methods aligned with the preschool curriculum.
Support AAC or other communication systems if the child uses them.
Safety and Care
Ensure the child's safety during all activities and transitions, including transport to buses/gates.
Assist with self-care needs as appropriate and as per school policy (toileting, hygiene, feeding).
Follow all safeguarding, health, and infection-control protocols.
Teamwork with Therapists
Coordinate with occupational/speech/behavior therapists to carry over strategies in class.
Practice and generalize therapist-recommended exercises or goals during daily routines.
Training and Professional Growth
Attend school-led trainings on inclusion, child protection, first aid, and behavior support.
Stay updated on best practices in early childhood special needs support.
