Setter cum Operator - 5 Axis CNC (5-Axis Setter/Operator)
Kannan Tools & Dies
Position Overview
The Setter cum Operator - 5 Axis CNC is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring advanced 5-axis machining centers to manufacture complex, high-precision components.
This role includes machine setup, multi-axis toolpath validation, tool setting, offset adjustments, fixture alignment, and in-process inspection to meet aerospace, medical, oil & gas, and engineering standards.
The responsibility is highly skilled and requires strong technical understanding of 3D surfaces, complex geometries, and multi-axis machining operations.
Key Responsibilities
1. 5-Axis Machine Setup & Preparation
Set up 5-axis machines (trunnion/tilt-rotary table/head-table configurations) with fixtures, tools, and references.
Load and verify CAM-generated 5-axis programs.
Perform dry-run simulations to confirm toolpaths, rotations, tilts, and safe clearance.
Set work offsets, tool length offsets, dynamic work offsets (DWO/G68.2), and rotary axis alignment.
2. Multi-Axis Machining Operations
Operate 5-axis CNC machines for machining of contours, 3D profiles, pockets, undercuts, and multi-face operations.
Execute machining as per process sheets and complex part requirements.
Optimize toolpath parameters at machine level when required.
Maintain stable machining with minimal chatter, vibration, or spindle load issues.
3. Dimensional Inspection & Quality Control
Perform first-piece and in-process inspection using advanced equipment:
Vernier, Micrometer
Height gauge
Bore gauge
CMM (Basic understanding preferred)
Trimos / Vision measurement systems (if applicable)
Validate profile accuracy, GD&T features, angles, and complex surface tolerances.
Coordinate with Quality for inspection of critical aerospace/medical components.
4. Tooling, Fixture, & Program Support
Set and adjust cutter compensation, tool lengths, radius compensation, and wear offsets.
Identify and replace worn-out inserts, endmills, ball-nose cutters, and special tooling.
Work with Tool Room and CAM Programmers to resolve tool compatibility or toolpath issues.
Provide feedback on toolpath optimization and reduce machining time.
5. Machine Monitoring & Troubleshooting
Monitor spindle load, axis movement, vibration, coolant flow, and machining sound.
Troubleshoot machining issues related to surface defects, chatter, burrs, dimensional errors, or tool failures.
Report machine, spindle, or axis issues immediately to maintenance and reporting supervisors.
6. Safety, Housekeeping & Discipline
Ensure adherence to PPE, machine safety, and EHS rules.
Maintain a clean, organized 5-axis machining cell with proper 5S practices.
Handle tools, holders, and complex fixtures with safety and precision.
7. Documentation & Reporting
Maintain setup sheets, tool lists, tool change logs, and job cards.
Record dimensional results, deviations, rework, and machining changes.
Provide detailed shift handover notes to ensure continuity.
Update ERP/MIS for job status and production data when required.
Education
ITI / Diploma in Machinist, Mechanical, Production, or related trade.
Additional certification in CNC multi-axis machining is preferred.
Experience
3-8 years of experience in CNC machining, with minimum 2 years on 4-axis/5-axis machines.
Experience in aerospace, medical devices, or high-precision engineering components is strongly preferred.
Skills
Strong knowledge of 5-axis machining principles, tilting/rotary axis functions, and coordinate transformations.
Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, GD&T, and 3D CAD models.
Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments.
Good understanding of cutting tools for 3D machining--ball nose, bull nose, step tools, etc.
Exposure to Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, or Mazak 5-axis controls.
