About the Role

At Sony LIV, we're delivering rich, real-time video experiences at scale. We're looking for a

Senior Staff Android Engineer

who brings deep technical expertise across

Android frameworks

,

ExoPlayer/Media3

, and modern app architectures -- and who is ready to influence and elevate engineering practices across the team.


You'll work on solving complex problems in media playback, performance, modularization, and architecture. While this is primarily an

individual contributor role

, you'll also act as a technical mentor and cross-functional collaborator -- shaping both code and direction for high-impact projects.

What You'll Do

Lead development of advanced

media playback capabilities

using ExoPlayer/Media3, covering VOD, Live, DRM, and edge cases like offline and failover playback. Design and maintain

robust, modular app architectures

, enabling scalability and clean feature delivery. Drive deep

performance optimizations

across memory, app startup, playback, and rendering pipelines. Contribute as a

technical anchor

in multi-team initiatives -- collaborating with product, design, backend, and other platform leads. Set best practices for

modern Android development

using Jetpack Compose, Kotlin Flows, Hilt, Coroutines, etc. Conduct high-quality code reviews, mentor other engineers, and help evolve Sony LIV's engineering standards. Build with observability and resilience in mind -- tagging, telemetry, analytics, crash protection, and CI.

What We're Looking For

-12 years

of Android development experience with proven hands-on expertise in

Kotlin

,

ExoPlayer/Media3

, and system-level debugging. Strong foundation in

Android internals

, custom views/rendering pipelines, and background processing patterns. Solid understanding of

streaming protocols

(HLS/DASH),

DRM

(e.g., Widevine), and

adaptive playback

. Familiarity with

architecture patterns

like Clean, MVI, MVVM -- and app modularization. Proficient with Jetpack libraries (Compose, Room, WorkManager, Navigation, etc.) and

Dependency Injection

(Hilt/Dagger). Experience with

CI/CD

, crash/ANR tools, A/B testing, and feature rollout strategies. Excellent communication, architectural thinking, and ability to influence across teams.

Nice to Have

Android TV, Chromecast, or large-screen playback experience. Exposure to

low-latency live streaming

, sports broadcasting, or time-shifted playback. Knowledge of advanced media formats:

AV1

, Dolby Atmos/Vision, or similar. Contributions to open-source Android libraries or playback tech.
