Your future duties and responsibilities

SAS Viya 3.5 Administration Skill Set

This requires a more modern "DevOps" mindset. You'll spend less time in GUIs and more time on the command line and with automation tools.

Key Tools & Concepts:



. Ansible: This is non-negotiable for Viya 3.5. Deployment: You must understand how to run Ansible playbooks to deploy, update, or uninstall the SAS Viya environment. Configuration: Modifying vars.yml files to customize the deployment (e.g., adding TLS, changing ports, configuring authentication).

. Linux Expertise: Viya 3.5 runs exclusively on Linux. Service Management: Using systemd to manage all the microservices that comprise the Viya platform. Log Analysis: Using journalctl to query the centralized logs from all microservices. System Tuning: Understanding and modifying kernel parameters (sysctl), user limits (ulimits), and managing yum or apt package repositories.

. CAS (Cloud Analytic Services) Administration: Understanding the distributed, in-memory architecture of the CAS server. Managing Caslibs (the Viya equivalent of librefs), including permissions and data loading. Managing CAS server settings, nodes, and troubleshooting performance.

. Command-Line Interface (CLI): The sas-admin CLI is a primary day-to-day tool. Managing users and groups, content (reports, folders), and CAS settings.

. SAS Environment Manager (Viya Edition): The web-based UI for Viya. While the CLI is powerful, the UI is used for monitoring CAS, managing user/group rules, promoting content, and viewing service status.





General Skills

These are the foundational skills that bridge both platforms.



. Authentication & Security: Deep understanding of how SAS integrates with enterprise identity providers like LDAP or Active Directory. Experience configuring single sign-on (SSO) is a major plus.

. Networking: Solid knowledge of ports, firewalls, DNS, load balancers, and HTTPS/TLS. You will constantly be troubleshooting connectivity issues.

. Storage: Understanding of shared file systems (like NFS) is critical, as both platforms rely on it for configuration, user homes, and data access.

. Problem-Solving: A systematic, analytical approach to troubleshooting is the most important skill. You need to be able to isolate a problem (Is it the user? The client? The network? The mid-tier? The back-end?) by effectively using logs and monitoring tools.

. Communication: The ability to clearly communicate with end-users (analysts, data scientists), developers, and other IT infrastructure teams.



For a job application, you should clearly separate your experience on your resume, perhaps with a "SAS 9.4 Administration" section and a "SAS Viya 3.5 Administration" section, highlighting the specific tools and accomplishments for each.
