Position Summary

The Senior Resident in General Surgery is responsible for providing high-quality surgical care, assisting in teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students, and participating in research and departmental academic activities. This role involves both independent and supervised clinical responsibilities, including patient management, emergency care, and surgical procedures.

The position is designed to provide advanced hands-on experience in general and subspecialty surgery while promoting academic growth and professionalism.

Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Responsibilities

Manage surgical inpatients, outpatients, and emergency cases under the supervision of faculty members. Perform and assist in surgical procedures (minor and major) as per skill and experience level. Conduct daily ward rounds, document patient progress, and update treatment plans. Participate in pre-operative and post-operative care of patients. Attend to emergency calls, trauma cases, and on-call duties as scheduled. Ensure timely documentation of case records, operative notes, and discharge summaries. Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to hospital protocols and ethical standards.

Teaching and Academic Duties

Assist faculty in teaching and demonstrating surgical techniques to

undergraduate (MBBS)

and

postgraduate (MS General Surgery)

students. Participate in academic activities such as seminars, case presentations, journal clubs, and clinical meetings. Present clinical cases, morbidity/mortality reports, and surgical audits. Prepare and deliver short academic presentations under faculty guidance.

Research Responsibilities

Participate in clinical research, surgical audits, and departmental studies. Assist in data collection, analysis, and manuscript preparation. Present research work or papers at institutional or external conferences.

Administrative Duties

Assist in maintaining surgical instruments, consumables, and operation theatre coordination. Ensure compliance with infection control and safety protocols. Support faculty in departmental administration, scheduling, and academic documentation. Mentor junior residents and interns in clinical and procedural skills.

Qualifications and RequirementsEducational Qualifications

Essential:

MBBS degree with MS (General Surgery) / DNB (General Surgery) from an institution recognized by the

National Medical Commission (NMC)

.

Registration:

Valid registration with the State Medical Council or NMC.

Experience

Candidates who have recently completed post-graduation in General Surgery are eligible. Prior experience as a Junior Resident or Clinical Assistant in Surgery is desirable.

Skills and Competencies

Sound knowledge of surgical principles, procedures, and postoperative management. Proficiency in basic and intermediate surgical techniques. Ability to manage emergencies and trauma cases effectively. Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills. Compassionate attitude toward patients and families. Commitment to teaching, learning, and continuous professional development.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in subspecialty exposure such as laparoscopic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, or trauma surgery. Participation in academic research or published papers. Training in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
