• M.S or PHD in Research, Computer Science, Management Science or a related field
• 5+ years of work experience in areas such as data analytics, operations research, data modeling, machine learning and large scale simulation
• Demonstrated use of modeling and optimization techniques tailored to meet business needs and proven achievements in industrial production systems
• Experience in several of the following areas: machine learning, statistics, A/B testing, casual models, forecasting models, etc.
• Experience with R, Python or other statistical/machine learning software

Come join the Alexa team, building the speech and language solutions behind Amazon Echo and other Amazon products and services! You will help us invent the future for Alexa Data Services.

As a Senior Research Scientist, you will design, evangelize, and implement state-of-the-art solutions for never-before-solved problems, helping Alexa to provide customer great products. You will work closely with engineers to design and run experiments, research new algorithms, and implement algorithms to improve Alexa Data Service products. You will find optimal solutions to build decisions given capacity constraints and the demand distributions. You will partner with technology and product leaders to solve business and technology problems using scientific approaches to build new services that surprise and delight our customers. You will drive process changes that comes with automation and smarter optimization. You are an individual with outstanding analytical abilities, communication skills, and are comfortable working with technical teams and systems. You will collaborate on cross-disciplinary efforts with other scientists within Amazon. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, comfortable with ambiguity, with strong attention to detail, an ability to work in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment and a desire to help share the overall business.

Key job responsibilities
Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

• Design and develop complex mathematical, statistical, simulation and optimization models and apply them to define strategic and tactical needs and drive the appropriate business and technical solutions
• Drive actions at scale using scientifically-based methods and decision making
• Design experiments, test hypotheses, and build actionable models
• Prototype these models by using modeling languages such as R or in software languages such as Python.
• Work with software engineering teams to drive scalable, real-time implementations
• Utilizing Amazon systems and tools to effectively work with high volumes of data

• Prior background in quantitative field (Computer Science, Mathematics, Machine Learning, AI, Statistics, or equivalent) is a plus
• Experience designing and supporting large-scale distributed systems in a production environment
• Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Java, C++, or other programming language, as well as with R, SAS, MATLAB, Python or similar scripting language
• Superior communication skills, ability to convey rigorous mathematical concepts and considerations to non-experts
• Thrive in a fast-paced, innovative environment
• Ability to distill customer requirements into problem definitions, dealing with ambiguity and competing objectives
• Ability to manage and quantify improvement in customer experience or value for the business resulting from research outcomes
