Our projects team is now building world-class capability in India as a new hub of Production and Operations (P&O) Projects India supporting both local and international projects.
Role Synopsis:
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will join Projects India organisation in the engineering and quality team to provide deep mechanical engineering expertise, oversight, judgment and support to Production & Operations (P&O) Projects. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead the bp team performance managing the contractor and supervising their technical work to select, design, procure, install and commission the appropriate mechanical pressure systems required for the project. This includes piping, valves, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, storage tanks, mechanical handling equipment and HVAC systems for production facilities. The role is based at the Pune office but will require significant contractor facing work at major engineering contractor office locations in both India and possibly ex-India.
What you will deliver
Lead mechanical engineering team to deliver safe design of cost effective, quality and competitive projects.
Lead, oversee and performance manage the Projects mechanical engineering team and Engineering Contractor(s) to deliver mechanical engineering scopes, including:
Provide technical oversight, review, guidance and approval of mechanical engineering design contractor deliverables.
Provide requirements for mechanical equipment specification in requisitions/datasheets and selection as well as engineering package technical content.
Review and recommend technical bid analysis for mechanical equipment and systems.
Make technical decisions on requests for exceptions/deviations to specifications or standards.
Lead technical recommendations and guidance to equipment suppliers performance and delivery,
Provide leadership in addressing design issues with considerations of safety, cost, schedule, and quality o Work with engineering contractor(s) to verify they are performing required activities in line with project processes and schedules, and assist bp's Engineering Manager in contract performance management o Ensure that Engineering Contractor(s) bp's Engineering Practices and industry standards in engineering designs o Assure quality and consistency in mechanical engineering and equipment delivery on projects o Approval of vendor Inspection and Test Plans, documents and drawings
Accountable for preparation of mechanical equipment for factory acceptance test (FAT) and site acceptance test (SAT) plans
Record and share relevant findings
Lead resolution of complex mechanical engineering technical challenges.
Lead other engineers in the mechanical engineering subject area team to deliver scope through mentoring, coaching and peer reviews.
Coach earlier career engineers to aid in their technical and professional development.
Interface with other disciplines, construction, commissioning and operations teams for mechanical design.
What you will need to be successful
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
Preferred education/certifications:
Chartered Engineer or Registered Professional Engineer
Minimum years of relevant experience:
Min of 10 years in oil and gas/petrochemical/ refining/ chemical or equivalent, with minimum 5 years proven experience of Leading Mechanical Engineering work in Major Capital projects.

12+ Years
Must have experiences/skills:
Excellent knowledge and practical application of mechanical engineering fundamentals related to pressure systems and mechanical equipment including:
Failure modes of pressure equipment
Applicable design codes (ASME, BSI, ISO, IOGP)
Experience of mechanical engineering delivery in Projects including design, specification, procurement, fabrication and commissioning.
Strong technical knowledge of mechanical engineering design including vessels, process equipment packages, piping and valves.
Practical working knowledge of governing codes, industry standards (ASME, BSI, ISO, IOGP), local regulations relevant to mechanical engineering.
Experience as competency assessed lead engineer in client or contractor organisation
Deep discipline expertise with good track record of multi subject area integration.
Experience taking a discipline leadership role in EPC environment on major Projects.
Pragmatic decision maker, willing to challenge and ensure engineering value is delivered.
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the project team, contractors and projects leadership.
Good to have experiences/skills (Can be trained for - learning/on-the-job):
Experience of operating and maintaining mechanical equipment
Experience in mechanical handing and layouts design
Experience of working with remote team and collaborative approach to delivery
Leading engineering in different contracting models (lump sum; lump sum conversion).
Self-motivated with a willingness to learn from others and work with minimum direction.
