Mechanical Design Engineer - Product Development (Plastic Parts)
Location
Ahmedabad, India (On-site)
Employment Type
Full-time
Role Overview
We are looking for a hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer who can take industrial design sketches, concepts, and rough CAD and convert them into production-ready mechanical designs suitable for injection molding and precision machining.
This is not a styling or visualization role. This role sits at the intersection of industrial design intent and real-world manufacturing constraints. You will be responsible for making designs that can actually be manufactured, assembled, tested, and scaled.
You will work closely with industrial designers, prototyping vendors, and internal R&D teams to deliver robust, cost-effective mechanical designs.
Key Responsibilities
Core Design Responsibilities
Convert industrial designer sketches, surfaces, and concepts into fully constrained, parametric CAD models
Develop manufacturable part designs with correct wall thickness, ribs, bosses, draft angles, fillets, shut-offs, and undercut strategies
Own Design for Manufacturing (DFM) for injection molding and machining
Prepare production-grade CAD (not presentation CAD)
Manufacturing & DFM
Design plastic parts for injection molding, including:
Draft analysis
Parting line strategy
Moldability considerations
Shrinkage and tolerance stack-ups
Design machined components considering:
Tool access
Standard cutters
Cost-effective machining strategies
Work on assembly design, fasteners, snap-fits, inserts, and tolerances
Documentation & Handover
Create 2D manufacturing drawings with GD&T where required
Prepare BOMs, exploded views, and assembly drawings
Support vendors during prototyping and early manufacturing runs
Incorporate feedback from machinists, molders, and fabricators
Prototyping & Iteration
Support rapid prototyping (3D printing, CNC, soft tooling)
Iterate designs based on functional testing and real-world feedback
Participate in design reviews and failure analysis
Required Skills & Experience
Mandatory
Bachelor's degree in
Mechanical Engineering
Strong proficiency in
SolidWorks
Solid understanding of
injection molding design principles
Practical knowledge of
machining processes
(CNC, turning, milling)
Ability to convert
aesthetic concepts into manufacturable designs
Experience designing
plastic housings, enclosures, and mechanical parts
Preferred
Experience working with
industrial designers
Exposure to
medical devices, consumer products, or electro-mechanical assemblies
Understanding of
tolerance stack-ups and fits
Experience with
prototyping and vendor coordination
Familiarity with
DFMEA / basic product validation workflows
What This Role Is NOT
Not a pure CAD drafting role
Not a surface-modeling or visualization role
Not a styling or rendering position
If you cannot justify why a part can be molded or machined the way you designed it, this role is not a fit.
What We Offer
Hands-on exposure to real product development and R&D
Work on end-to-end product development, not isolated CAD tasks
Opportunity to grow into Lead Mechanical Engineer / Product Architect
Direct involvement in manufacturable, real-world products
