Principal / Head of Institution / Library Director
Job Purpose:
The Senior Librarian is responsible for managing the library's operations, ensuring efficient access to resources, and promoting a culture of learning, research, and knowledge-sharing. The role involves supervision of staff, collection development, implementation of library policies, and integration of digital resources to support academic and research excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Library Management & Administration
Oversee day-to-day library operations, including circulation, cataloging, acquisitions, and reference services.
Develop, implement, and update library policies and procedures.
Supervise and guide library staff, assigning duties and evaluating performance.
Ensure proper maintenance of physical and digital resources.
Collection Development & Resource Management
Plan, acquire, and manage print, digital, and multimedia resources to meet institutional needs.
Conduct regular review and weeding of outdated materials.
Negotiate with vendors and publishers for subscriptions and licenses.
User Services & Academic Support
Provide research and reference assistance to students, faculty, and researchers.
Conduct orientation sessions, workshops, and training on effective use of library resources.
Support faculty in course material preparation and research projects.
Technology & Digital Resource Management
Manage library software systems (e.g., OPAC, digital repositories, e-resources).
Promote digital literacy and integrate new technologies into library services.
Ensure smooth functioning of e-library platforms, online databases, and institutional repositories.
Strategic Planning & Reporting
Develop annual budgets, proposals, and reports for management.
Plan and execute initiatives to enhance library services and user engagement.
Ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements (e.g., UGC, NAAC, AICTE).
Leadership & Professional Development
Mentor junior staff and interns.
Stay updated with emerging trends in librarianship, information technology, and knowledge management.
Represent the institution in academic, professional, and library networks.
Qualifications & Skills:
Master's degree in library and information science (M.Lib.I.Sc) or equivalent (Ph.D. preferred).
Minimum
3-5 years of experience
in academic or research libraries, with at least
3 years in a supervisory role
.
Strong knowledge of library management systems (LMS), digital libraries, and e-resources.
Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Familiarity with copyright laws, information ethics, and digital preservation.
Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, researchers, and administration.
