Senior Laboratory Technician

Job Summary:

The Senior Laboratory Technician is responsible for overseeing daily operations in the hospital's laboratory, ensuring accurate testing, timely reporting, quality control, and adherence to safety standards. The role includes supervisory duties, technical expertise, and coordination with medical and nursing staff to support patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

Sample Handling & Testing:

Receive, label, and process clinical specimens (blood, urine, tissue, etc.). Perform complex diagnostic tests in microbiology, hematology, biochemistry, immunology, and histopathology. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, analyzers, microscopes).

Quality Control & Compliance:

Conduct routine calibration and maintenance of instruments. Ensure compliance with national and international laboratory standards (e.g., NABL, ISO). Maintain and review internal quality control and participate in external quality assurance programs.

Supervision & Training:

Supervise junior lab technicians and lab assistants. Train new staff and interns on laboratory protocols and equipment use. Coordinate shifts and manage daily work schedules.

Reporting & Documentation:

Record test results accurately and enter data into the laboratory information system (LIS). Prepare and verify reports before submission to physicians. Maintain inventory of reagents, chemicals, and consumables.

Safety & Hygiene:

Enforce infection control procedures and biosafety guidelines. Ensure safe disposal of biohazardous waste in accordance with hospital policy. Respond to equipment malfunctions and initiate troubleshooting procedures.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) or equivalent (Master's preferred). Minimum 5-7 years of hands-on experience in a clinical laboratory, with at least 2 years in a senior or supervisory role. Certification from a recognized body (e.g., ASCP, MLT). Familiarity with hospital information systems and LIS software.
