Job Description

The ICU Staff Nurse In-Charge is responsible for supervising, coordinating, and managing all nursing activities within the Intensive Care Unit. This role ensures high standards of patient care, staff performance, infection control, and adherence to hospital protocols, while maintaining efficient and compassionate patient services.

Key Responsibilities:1. Patient Care Management



Ensure delivery of high-quality nursing care to critically ill patients. Monitor patients' conditions and ensure timely reporting to physicians. Supervise administration of medications, IV fluids, and other treatments. Ensure accurate documentation in patient records and nursing charts. Maintain infection control and aseptic techniques in all procedures.

2. Staff Supervision and Coordination



Plan, allocate, and supervise nursing duties and shift schedules. Guide, mentor, and support ICU nursing staff in clinical and professional development. Conduct performance appraisals and recommend training needs. Maintain adequate nurse-to-patient ratios and manage staff shortages effectively.

3. Equipment and Inventory Management



Ensure availability and proper functioning of all ICU equipment (ventilators, monitors, infusion pumps, etc.). Coordinate with biomedical and maintenance teams for equipment servicing. Monitor usage of drugs, consumables, and supplies; ensure timely requisition and stock control.

4. Quality, Safety, and Compliance



Ensure adherence to hospital policies, nursing protocols, and regulatory standards. Participate in audits, inspections, and quality improvement initiatives. Maintain records for infection control, incident reports, and patient safety. Ensure strict compliance with NABH/JCI standards (if applicable).

5. Communication and Coordination



Act as a liaison between doctors, nurses, patients, and relatives. Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams for optimal patient care. Handle patient complaints and resolve issues promptly and professionally.

6. Administrative Duties



Prepare duty rosters, reports, and performance summaries. Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to policy formulation. Maintain staff attendance, leave records, and disciplinary documentation.

Qualifications & Experience:



Education:

B.Sc. Nursing or GNM (with valid Nursing Council registration).

Experience:

Minimum 5-7 years of ICU experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or in-charge role.

Certifications:

BLS and ACLS mandatory. Critical Care Nursing certification preferred.

Key Skills:



Strong leadership and team management skills. Clinical expertise in critical care and emergency response. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Decision-making under pressure. Proficiency in documentation and report writing.
