We are seeking a

Senior Engineering Manager - Backend Systems

to lead and scale a world-class backend engineering organization. This role blends strategic leadership with deep technical expertise, overseeing the design and delivery of robust, high-performance systems that power large-scale digital experiences. You will be responsible for driving engineering excellence, fostering innovation, and aligning backend initiatives with business and product goals.
As a leader, you will inspire a team of talented engineers, establish best practices, and ensure the reliability, security, and scalability of our systems as we continue to grow.

Key Responsibilities

1. Team Leadership & Mentorship


Build, lead, and mentor a team of backend engineers, fostering an environment of trust, ownership, and collaboration.
Create structured development plans and conduct regular performance reviews to support career progression.
Encourage a culture of learning, innovation, and engineering craftsmanship.

2. Technical Strategy & Architecture


Define and evolve the technical roadmap for backend systems, ensuring scalability, resilience, and maintainability.
Guide architectural decisions around APIs, databases, and distributed systems to support evolving product needs.
Oversee code quality through design reviews, code reviews, and enforcement of best practices.

3. Delivery & Execution


Drive execution of backend projects, ensuring high standards of reliability, performance, and security.
Collaborate with product, design, and infrastructure teams to align technical execution with business outcomes.
Establish effective processes for sprint planning, capacity management, and timely feature delivery.

4. Operational Excellence


Implement performance monitoring, logging, and alerting systems to ensure operational efficiency.
Own incident management processes, post-mortems, and continuous system improvement initiatives.
Optimize infrastructure and application costs while maintaining system scalability.

5. Collaboration & Stakeholder Management


Partner closely with senior leadership to align backend goals with product vision and organizational priorities.
Communicate technical decisions, trade-offs, and progress clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
Collaborate cross-functionally to deliver cohesive end-to-end user experiences.

What You Bring

Experience:

10+ years in backend engineering, with at least 3 years in engineering leadership roles managing high-performing teams.

Technical Expertise:

Deep hands-on experience with backend frameworks, microservices, and distributed systems. Strong understanding of API design, databases (SQL/NoSQL), caching, and performance tuning.

Architecture Skills:

Proven ability to design and scale systems handling millions of transactions or users.

Leadership:

Exceptional people management and mentorship skills, with experience in scaling engineering organizations.

Strategic Vision:

Ability to connect long-term technical vision to immediate business needs.

Communication:

Excellent stakeholder management, conflict resolution, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Mindset:

Passionate about building scalable systems, operational excellence, and nurturing engineering culture.

Preferred Qualifications


Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
Experience in

cloud-native architectures (AWS, GCP, Azure)

Familiarity with

CI/CD, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)

Background in a

product-based or high-growth startup environment
