Pipe Engineer - WTP (Water Treatment Plant) Project
Job Profile

1. Role Overview
A Pipe Engineer in a WTP project is responsible for the

design, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance

of piping systems that handle raw water, treated water, sludge, chemicals, and backwash flows. The role ensures that all piping works comply with project specifications, relevant standards, safety norms, and quality requirements.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Design & Engineering

Review and interpret

P&IDs, GADs, isometric drawings, layouts

, and vendor drawings. Prepare or review

pipe routing

, pipe sizing, and hydraulic calculations. Select appropriate

pipe materials

(HDPE, DI, MS, SS, PVC, GRP etc.) based on pressure, flow and chemical compatibility. Prepare

BOQ, MTO, and technical specifications

. Coordinate with process, mechanical, electrical and civil teams for integrated design.

B. Site Execution

Supervise installation of pipes, fittings, valves, and supports according to drawings. Ensure proper

alignment, leveling, and slope

for process pipelines (e.g., raw water, treated water, sludge, chemical dosing lines). Plan and monitor

excavation, trenching, laying, welding, jointing, and hydro-testing

activities. Ensure compliance with

IS/ASME/ASTM

piping standards. Manage subcontractors and ensure timely completion of piping works.

C. Quality Assurance & Testing

Execute

hydrostatic testing, pneumatic testing

, and flushing works. Conduct

material inspection

, joint inspection, welding inspections, NDT as needed. Prepare QA/QC documents:

ITP, WPS, DPR, test reports, checklists

, etc.

D. Coordination & Documentation

Coordinate with

PMC/Client

for technical approvals and site inspections. Raise

RFIs, material requisitions

, and maintain as-built documentation. Assist in preparation of

project schedules, progress reports

, and work planning.

E. Safety & Compliance

Implement safety measures during excavation, welding, and pressure testing. Ensure compliance with

environmental and statutory norms

at WTP sites.

3. Skills & Competencies

Knowledge of

water treatment process

and plant piping systems. Strong understanding of

HDPE butt fusion, DI push-fit, MS welding

, flanged joints, UPVC solvent cementing. Familiarity with

pumps, valves, strainers, flow meters, chemical dosing systems

. Good experience with engineering software:

AutoCAD, Navisworks, MS Project

. Strong communication, reporting, and team coordination skills.

4. Typical Pipe Systems in a WTP

Raw water pipelines Clear water / treated water pipelines Backwash water lines Sludge and slurry pipelines Chemical dosing pipelines (Alum, Chlorine, Lime, PAC etc.) Air piping for filters/blowers Drain and overflow pipelines

5. Education & Experience

Diploma / B.Tech - Mechanical / Civil / Industrial Engineering

. 5-10 years of experience in

WTP / STP / ETP / EPC piping works
