Our modern, open ecosystem connects care teams and delivers actionable insights that drive better outcomes. Acquired by Bain Capital in a $17B deal, we're growing fast and investing in bold, strategic product innovations. We foster a values-driven culture focused on flexibility, collaboration, and work-life balance.
Headquartered in Boston, we have offices in Atlanta, Austin, Belfast, Burlington, and in India: Chennai, Bangalore, and Pune.
Position Summary: The Senior Associate, Product Management, leads a focused functional area within Medical Coding, serving as the Product Owner for one scrum team in Chennai. This role partners closely with engineering, design, data science, clinical coding SMEs, and operations to deliver measurable outcomes in coding automation, accuracy, and throughput. You will translate customer and stakeholder needs into prioritized backlogs, define acceptance criteria and quality thresholds, and ensure releases meet compliance, auditability, and business impact.
About the team: Our Medical Coding team operates at the core of athenahealth's Revenue Cycle Management (RCM), with deep integration across claim submission, follow-up, remittance processing and posting, patient billing, statements, and collections. The team focuses on automating and enhancing CPT/HCPCS/ICD-10-CM workflows, tightly integrated with athenanet to deliver a seamless, compliant, and efficient experience for practices and patients. Our work spans highly automated services at scale, cross-functional collaboration with Operations, and partnerships with BPO vendors.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Own the product backlog for a discrete Medical Coding workstream, writing clear epics and user stories with testable acceptance criteria.
  • Lead discovery and design sessions with practices, coders, operations, and BPO partners to validate problem statements and solutions; synthesize customer feedback into product decisions.
  • Collaborate with Product Leadership to prioritize problems or themes that drive desired outcomes and goals.
  • Partner with engineering and UX to operationalize automation and determine whether experiments, alpha, and/or beta stages are needed to validate product-market fit; define and utilize these appropriately.
  • Ensure integration fidelity across athenanet and RCM workflows.
  • Drive release readiness including documentation, training, change management, and rollout plans; monitor post-release performance and course-correct as needed.
  • Manage stakeholder communications including status updates, risks, dependencies, and decisions across zones; create concise PRDs, dashboards, and decision memos.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required; preferred fields include Computer Science, Business, or Product Design.
  • 5+ years of overall professional experience, including a minimum of 2-3 years in product management.
  • Experience working with Agile (Scrum) teams is preferred.
  • Proven ability to test and validate product value in the market.
  • Demonstrated success in driving product vision and prioritization in a dynamic environment using analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills, including PRDs, acceptance criteria, and stakeholder updates; ability to influence without authority and drive alignment.

Our company culture: Our talented employees -- or athenistas, as we call ourselves -- spark the innovation and passion needed to accomplish our vision. We are a diverse group of dreamers and do-ers with unique knowledge, expertise, backgrounds, and perspectives. Our DEI commitment: Our vision of accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all requires addressing the inequities that stand in the way. That's one reason we prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion in every aspect of our business, from attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce to maintaining an inclusive environment for athenistas, our partners, customers and the communities where we work and serve.
What we can do for you:

With consistent communication and digital collaboration tools, athenahealth enables employees to find a balance that feels fulfilling and productive for each individual situation.
In addition to our traditional benefits and perks, we sponsor events throughout the year, including book clubs, external speakers, and hackathons.
