Job Description

Job Title:

Seismologist

Fervo's Mission is to use innovation in geoscience to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy. To accomplish that goal, Fervo has developed groundbreaking technology solutions that have advanced the state-of-the-art of geothermal energy decades ahead of schedule, including the world's most successful commercial enhanced geothermal system completed in 2023. Fervo has raised over $400 million from leading investors and has secured a multi-billion-dollar project pipeline to meet the world's growing need for 24/7 carbon free energy. Join us and work alongside world-class engineers, researchers, investors, and developers in making geothermal a key pillar of our climate-friendly energy future.

About the job

The Seismologist will be responsible for the processing of critical borehole and surface seismic monitoring campaigns. This position will be responsible for implementing Fervo's induced seismicity monitoring and mitigation plans. Key responsibilities include leading the real-time data processing, and implementing a traffic light system. The ideal candidate will develop algorithms to improve real-time seismic hazard analysis to inform Fervo's operational response protocols. This role is open to all experience levels meeting the required qualifications and will be an integral part of a team with other geophysicists, fiber optic experts, reservoir engineers, and computational scientists.

Responsibilities

Implement advanced seismic event detection and location algorithms

Gather, interpret, and integrate microseismic data into geological modeling and reservoir performance evaluation

Analyzing induced seismicity to assess potential hazards, conduct risk assessments, and enhance completion efficiency

Collaborate internally and externally on induced seismicity and associated risks, engaging with geophysicists, geologists, and engineers to enhance understanding of reservoir complexities and refine Fervo development plans and operational response protocols

Develop advanced software and algorithms for real-time seismic hazard analysis, including physics-based and/or statistical seismological methods

Qualifications

Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree in Earth sciences, Applied Geophysics or Seismology from a deemed/recognized (AICTE) university

Hands-on experience with earthquake location software such as SeisComP, Antelope, Seisan, Earthworm, or other open-source algorithms like NonLinLoc and HypoDD

Proficiency in earthquake codes, encompassing Moment Tensor inversion, stress drop estimation, and integration of seismicity with Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical-Chemical Modeling; Candidates with expertise in seismology and the capacity and willingness to learn the above skills are also encouraged to apply

Familiarity with Linux operating systems and proficiency in the Python programming language, including script and tool development for seismic data processing and analysis

Preferred:

Experience in machine learning applied to seismological applications
