The School Nurse is responsible for managing the health and well-being of students and staff by providing first aid, maintaining medical records, supporting health programs, and ensuring compliance with school health and safety policies. The role requires strong communication, medical knowledge, and the ability to respond effectively to emergencies.
Key Responsibilities1. Student Health Care & First Aid
Provide immediate first aid and emergency care to students and staff.
Assess minor illnesses and injuries and determine appropriate treatment or referral.
Administer prescribed medications as per school policy and doctor's instructions.
Handle cases of fever, allergy, asthma, injuries, and other common school-time health concerns.
2. Health Monitoring & Record Management
Maintain updated individual health records for all students.
Track chronic conditions (asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, etc.) and create care plans for affected students.
Maintain records of daily visits, treatments given, and medicines used.
Manage and update the school's medical inventory and ensure availability of first aid supplies.
3. Liaison With Parents & Doctors
Communicate with parents regarding injuries, illnesses, or medical concerns during school hours.
Coordinate with local hospitals/clinics in case of medical emergencies.
Inform parents about health events, contagious diseases, or required vaccinations.
4. Health Education & Awareness
Conduct awareness programs on hygiene, nutrition, menstrual health, and general well-being.
Support health-related school events--health camps, vaccination drives, eye/dental checkups.
Guide teachers on basic first aid and emergency response procedures.
5. Safety & Compliance
Ensure the medical room is clean, organized, and well-equipped at all times.
Monitor students' health during sports events, field trips, and large school gatherings.
Ensure compliance with school health policies and state regulations on student health and safety.
Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional ethics.
6. Additional Responsibilities
Assist in preparing health reports for audits.
Support emergency evacuation drills by addressing first-aid preparedness.
Participate in training sessions and professional development as needed.
Diploma/B.Sc. in Nursing (mandatory).
Registered Nurse (RN) with appropriate nursing council.
Experience
1-3 years of experience in clinical or school/child care settings preferred.
Skills & Competencies
Strong clinical judgment and emergency response skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work with children compassionately and patiently.
Knowledge of first-aid, medication administration, and pediatric care.
Good record-keeping and organizational abilities.
