Diploma / Degree in Engineering, Safety, or related field.
NEBOSH / IOSH / Diploma in Industrial Safety
preferred.
Minimum
2-5 years of experience
in shipbuilding, ship repair, marine, or heavy engineering industry.
Knowledge of Indian safety regulations and shipyard safety practices.
Job Purpose
The Safety Officer is responsible for implementing, monitoring, and enforcing health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards at the shipyard and project sites. The role ensures compliance with statutory regulations and company safety policies to prevent accidents, injuries, and occupational health hazards during shipbuilding and repair activities.
Ensure compliance with statutory safety laws such as
Factories Act, Dock Workers (Safety, Health & Welfare) Regulations, IS standards, and OSHA guidelines
.
Implement company HSE policies, procedures, and safety management systems across shipbuilding activities.
Coordinate with management to ensure safe work practices are followed at all times.
2. Hazard Identification & Risk Control
Identify potential hazards related to
hot work, confined space entry, working at height, lifting operations, painting, blasting, and electrical work
.
Conduct
risk assessments, job safety analysis (JSA), and toolbox talks
.
Recommend corrective and preventive actions to minimize safety risks.
3. Site Inspections & Audits
Conduct daily safety inspections of work areas, equipment, scaffolding, cranes, lifting tools, and PPE usage.
Monitor contractor and subcontractor safety compliance.
Participate in internal and external safety audits.
4. Incident & Accident Management
Investigate accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
Prepare incident reports and maintain accident records as per legal requirements.
Ensure implementation of corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
5. Training & Awareness
Conduct safety induction training for employees, contract workers, and visitors.
Organize periodic safety training on firefighting, emergency response, confined space safety, and PPE usage.
Promote safety awareness and a proactive safety culture at the shipyard.
6. Emergency Preparedness
Assist in developing and implementing emergency response plans.
Conduct mock drills for fire, gas leaks, man-overboard, and medical emergencies.
Ensure availability and maintenance of fire-fighting equipment and first-aid facilities.
7. Documentation & Reporting
Maintain safety records, permits to work (PTW), inspection checklists, and training logs.
Prepare monthly safety reports, statistics, and compliance updates for management.
Support statutory inspections and audits by authorities.
