Key duties and responsibilities Ensuring health and safety compliance
Develop and enforce safety policies:
Create and implement comprehensive safety procedures in line with government regulations, such as OSHA standards in the U.S., and internal company requirements.
Conduct regular inspections and audits:
Perform site walk-throughs to identify and correct potential hazards, poor conditions, or unsafe practices. This includes examining machinery, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE) usage.
Manage risk assessments:
Identify and evaluate potential risks and hazards in the workplace and develop strategies and controls to mitigate them.
Provide training and education:
Conduct safety training programs and "toolbox talks" for employees to raise awareness of safe practices, emergency procedures, and the proper handling of equipment.
Investigate incidents:
In the event of an accident, incident, or near-miss, investigate the root cause and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Coordinate emergency preparedness:
Develop emergency response plans, including evacuation procedures and fire drills, and ensure proper communication protocols are in place.
Managing hazardous materials
Hazard communication:
Ensure that information about the identity and hazards of all chemicals is available and understandable to workers.
Safe handling and storage:
Oversee the proper labeling, handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
Monitor exposure levels:
Monitor and assess employee exposure to substances like dust, fumes, noise, and vibration to ensure they are within safe limits.
Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene
Monitor housekeeping:
Ensure all work areas are kept clean, organized, and free of clutter to prevent slips, trips, and falls.
Manage waste and effluents:
Establish and oversee proper systems for the disposal of wastes and effluents.
Oversee hygiene facilities:
Ensure the factory provides adequate and separate washrooms, toilets, and drinking water facilities for employees.
Regulate ventilation and temperature:
Ensure proper air circulation, dust and fume control, and comfortable temperatures throughout the premises.
