Key Responsibilities:

Safety Program Development and Implementation:

Design, implement, and regularly update safety programs and policies that comply with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA). Conduct risk assessments to identify potential hazards in chemical processes, equipment, and workplace conditions.

Training and Education:

Conduct safety training sessions for plant employees on emergency procedures, the proper use of protective equipment, safe handling of chemicals, and environmental protection. Ensure that all workers are adequately trained in the safe operation of equipment and emergency response protocols.

Compliance and Regulations:

Monitor compliance with safety regulations, including environmental laws and OSHA standards. Work with regulators to ensure that the plant meets all necessary safety, environmental, and health standards.

Incident Investigation:

Investigate accidents, incidents, or near-misses to determine the root cause and recommend corrective actions. Prepare detailed reports following incidents and ensure proper documentation for regulatory purposes.

Safety Audits and Inspections:

Regularly inspect plant facilities, equipment, and systems to ensure they are operating safely and in compliance with safety standards. Conduct internal safety audits and participate in external audits.

Emergency Response and Crisis Management:

Develop and maintain emergency response plans for potential chemical spills, fires, explosions, or other hazardous events. Lead emergency drills and ensure all staff understand their roles in a crisis situation.

Chemical Safety Management:

Ensure proper labeling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals. Monitor the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety systems (e.g., ventilation, emergency showers) to prevent exposure to hazardous substances.

Record Keeping and Reporting:

Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, audits, training, incidents, and safety equipment maintenance. Report safety performance to upper management and suggest improvements.

Continuous Improvement:

Promote a culture of safety within the organization by encouraging feedback from workers and proactively suggesting improvements. Keep up with advancements in safety technology, industry standards, and best practices.

Skills and Qualifications:

Education:

A bachelor's degree in occupational safety, environmental health, chemical engineering, or a related field is often required. Additional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or OSHA certifications are beneficial.

Knowledge of Chemical Safety:

Strong understanding of chemical hazards, handling procedures, and industrial safety practices.

Problem-Solving Skills:

Ability to analyze and resolve safety issues, risks, and emergencies.

Attention to Detail:

Ensuring all safety measures are thoroughly checked and properly implemented.

Communication Skills:

Ability to train staff, write reports, and communicate with regulators or emergency services.
