The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring a safe working environment by enforcing safety policies, conducting risk assessments, and promoting best practices in handling and storing steel materials.
Key Responsibilities:
Compliance with Safety Regulations
Ensure compliance with local, national, and international safety standards
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of maritime and shipyard safety laws and ensure policies reflect them.

2. Risk Assessment & Hazard Identification
Conduct regular risk assessments and job safety analyses (JSA).
Identify potential hazards in shipbuilding, welding, lifting operations, and confined spaces.

3. Accident Prevention & Investigation
Implement preventive measures and controls to avoid incidents.
Lead investigations into accidents or near-misses, document findings, and
recommend corrective actions.

4. Safety Training & Awareness
Organize safety drills, toolbox talks, and induction programs.
Train employees and contractors on PPE use, emergency response, fire safety, and safe work practices.
Conduct a Major fire safety exercise (Firefighting drill) involving all safety personnel twice per week

5. Emergency Preparedness
Develop and maintain emergency response plans.
Coordinate fire drills, evacuation plans, and first aid training.

6. Safety Audits & Inspections
Schedule and conduct internal safety audits and inspections of ships, equipment, and facilities.
Address non-conformities and implement corrective/preventive actions.

7. Permit to Work (PTW) System Management
Oversee the PTW system for high-risk tasks like hot work, working at heights, and confined space entry.
Ensure proper documentation and approvals are in place.

8. Monitoring & Reporting
Track key safety performance indicators (KPIs) such as LTIFR (Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate), TRIR (Total Recordable Incident Rate), etc.
Report to senior management and external agencies as required.
Conduct daily safety rounds of Yard by safety officer and maintain a record of the same in a register.
Carry out daily brief and Muster of all fire watchkeepers.
Establish and maintain "Near Miss boxes" in the yard. A Safety briefing may be included in the monthly staff meeting and one each procedure be explained by safety officer. E.g. Precautions to be undertaken prior commencing hot work, Precautions before entering confined spaces that may contain poisonous gases etc.

9. Safety Equipment Management
Ensure availability, maintenance, and proper use of PPE and safety equipment
(e.g., Gas detectors, Fire extinguishers, lifelines).

10. Safety Culture Development
Promote a culture of safety across all departments.
Engage leadership and workers in continuous safety improvement programs
Qualifications and Skills:
Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Safety, or related field.
Minimum
8 years of relevant experience
in an industrial, warehouse, or yard environment (preferably steel or heavy materials).
Safety certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or similar are strongly preferred.
Strong knowledge of Indian safety regulations (Factories Act, etc.).
Good communication skills.
Ability to manage ground staff and enforce compliance under pressure.
Familiarity with material handling practices and heavy equipment operations.
Working Conditions:
Work environment includes outdoor yard and semi-enclosed warehouse spaces.
Exposure to steel products, machinery, dust, and heat.
Use of PPE is mandatory at all operational zones.
May require occasional weekend shifts or extended hours during peak activity.
