The Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for all employees and contractors involved in fire fighting projects. This role requires a specialized understanding of fire safety hazards and the ability to implement and enforce stringent safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.
Key Responsibilities:
Conducting Fire Safety Inspections:
Regularly inspect fire fighting equipment (e.g., fire hydrants, sprinklers, fire alarms, extinguishers) for proper installation, maintenance, and functionality.
Conduct fire safety surveys of project sites, identifying and mitigating potential fire hazards (e.g., combustible materials, inadequate ventilation, improper electrical wiring).
Participate in fire drills and emergency response exercises to evaluate effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
Implementing Fire Prevention Measures:
Develop and implement comprehensive fire prevention plans for all phases of the project, including construction, installation, and maintenance.
Ensure compliance with fire codes and regulations (e.g., NFPA, local fire codes).
Conduct fire safety training programs for all personnel involved in the project, including:
Fire extinguisher use and selection
Fire alarm systems and procedures
Evacuation plans and procedures
Hot work permits and procedures
Confined space entry procedures
Managing Fire Hazards:
Develop and implement procedures for handling and storing flammable and combustible materials.
Conduct regular inspections of welding and cutting operations to ensure proper safety precautions are in place.
Supervise the installation and testing of fire suppression systems.
Investigating Fire Incidents:
Investigate all fire incidents on the project site, including near misses.
Determine root causes of incidents and implement corrective and preventive actions.
Prepare and submit reports on fire incidents and safety investigations.
Promoting a Strong Fire Safety Culture:
Lead by example and demonstrate a strong commitment to fire safety.
Encourage a culture of proactive fire safety awareness among all personnel.
Recognize and reward employees for safe work practices and adherence to fire safety procedures.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Occupational Safety and Health, or a related field preferred.
Relevant safety certifications (e.g., OSHA 10/30, Firefighter I & II, NFPA certifications) required.
Minimum 1 year of experience in fire safety roles within the construction or fire fighting industry preferred.
Strong knowledge of fire codes, regulations, and best practices (e.g., NFPA standards).
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
