A safety engineer in the pipeline industry is responsible for ensuring the safety of pipeline operations by developing and implementing safety programs, conducting risk assessments, and performing inspections. Key duties include evaluating pipeline designs for safety, investigating accidents, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and training employees on safe practices and emergency response. The role requires a strong understanding of pipeline-specific hazards, safety equipment, and relevant codes and standards, such as ASME B31.4 and B31.8, and DOT 192 and 195.
Key responsibilities
Safety program management: Develop, implement, and oversee health, safety, and environment (HSE) policies and procedures for pipeline projects, from design and construction to maintenance and operation.
Risk assessment: Conduct risk analyses such as Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
Inspections and audits: Perform regular inspections of pipeline facilities, equipment, and working conditions to identify and address hazards, code violations, and non-compliance issues.
Incident investigation: Investigate accidents, near-misses, and other incidents to determine causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Regulatory compliance: Stay current with and ensure compliance with all federal, state, and industry safety laws, codes, and regulations related to hazardous liquid and gas pipelines.
Engineering review: Evaluate blueprints and designs to ensure safety is integrated from the initial planning stages.
Training and education: Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees and contractors on safe work practices, equipment usage, and emergency response procedures.
Emergency preparedness: Assist in developing and implementing emergency response plans for pipeline-related incidents.
