Job Description

Role Overview

The Programmer & Operator will be responsible for handling a

KUKA 6-axis industrial robotic arm

used for

precision sculpting and machining

on materials such as

foam, thermocol (EPS), MDF, and similar substrates

. The role involves converting 3D models into machine-ready toolpaths, ensuring accurate robotic movement, overseeing material setups, and maintaining safe operations.

Key ResponsibilitiesProgramming & Toolpath Generation

Create, modify, and optimize robotic programs using

KUKA KRL

, SPRUTCAM,

KUKA.CNC

,

RoboDK

,

Rhino + Grasshopper

, or compatible CAM software. Generate multi-axis toolpaths for sculpting large-scale models, props, and art installations. Import and process 3D files (STL, OBJ, STEP, GCODE etc.) to produce clean cutting/roughing/finishing toolpaths.

Operation & Execution

Set up the robotic arm, workpiece, jigs, tools, cutters, and spindles before each job. Monitor live machining/sculpting to ensure accuracy and surface quality. Adjust speeds, feeds, and toolpaths as required for different materials (foam, thermocol, MDF). Conduct periodic checks to avoid collisions, overcuts, or spindle issues.

Material & Machine Handling

Understand material densities, machining behavior, and finishing tolerances. Select suitable cutting tools, bits, and spindle parameters for different materials. Manage pre-cutting, roughing, and finishing passes for best output.

Maintenance & Safety

Perform daily/weekly maintenance of the robotic arm, spindle, and dust-extraction systems. Ensure compliance with safety protocols for robotic operations. Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and software issues.

Documentation & Coordination

Maintain logs of programming files, job parameters, and production timelines. Coordinate with designers, sculptors, and production teams for alignment on output. Provide improvements for workflow efficiency and production accuracy.

Required Skills & QualificationsTechnical Skills

Hands-on experience with

KUKA robots

and familiarity with

KRL (KUKA Robot Language)

. Proficiency with

RoboDK / PowerMill Robot / RhinoCAM / Grasshopper

or any robotic CAM tool. Strong understanding of multi-axis machining, CAD/CAM principles, and 3D geometry. Experience working with materials:

EPS foam, thermocol, MDF, PU foam

, etc. Knowledge of CNC machining is a strong advantage.

Additional Competencies

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Attention to detail with ability to execute precise complex sculptures. Ability to work with design teams and interpret artistic/sculptural requirements. Willingness to work on-site during machining and oversee long-duration jobs.

Preferred Experience

2-5 years of experience in robotic machining, CNC milling, or digital fabrication. Experience in fabrication for film sets, art installations, events, architecture, or product prototyping.
