The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for assessing, treating, and caring for patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders. The therapist works under the direction of a physician to provide respiratory care therapies, monitor patient progress, and ensure the effective use of respiratory equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
Assess patients with respiratory issues and determine appropriate treatment plans.
Administer respiratory therapies including oxygen therapy, aerosol medications, chest physiotherapy, and mechanical ventilation.
Manage and monitor ventilators and artificial airway devices (e.g., endotracheal tubes, tracheostomy tubes).
Perform diagnostic tests such as arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis, pulmonary function tests (PFTs), and pulse oximetry.
Maintain accurate patient records and document therapy results.
Educate patients and families about respiratory conditions and the proper use of treatments and equipment (e.g., inhalers, nebulizers).
Respond to emergency situations, including code blues, to provide airway management and life support.
Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care.
Clean, sterilize, inspect, and maintain respiratory equipment.
Adhere to all infection control and safety procedures.
Qualifications:
Education:
Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Respiratory Therapy or related field.
Licensure/Certification:
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential (NBRC).
State licensure (as required).
BLS and ACLS certification (may also require PALS and/or NRP).
Experience:
Preferably 1+ year in clinical respiratory care, but new graduates may be considered.
Skills and Abilities:
Strong knowledge of respiratory therapy principles and practices.
Ability to operate and troubleshoot respiratory equipment.
Effective communication and patient education skills.
Ability to work under pressure in emergency situations.
Attention to detail and accurate documentation.
Compassionate and patient-focused approach.
Work Environment:
Hospital settings (ICU, ER, general wards)
Clinics, nursing homes, home health settings
Exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and medical gases
May involve shift work, weekends, and on-call duties
