The Research Associate (RA) will play a key role in implementing the research project "Mapping the distribution of Invasive Alien Fishes (IAF) and assessing their threats to native biota in selected Ramsar wetlands of India." The RA will be responsible for coordinating and conducting field surveys, collecting environmental DNA (eDNA) samples, supporting laboratory work, analyzing data, and contributing to the development of management strategies for invasive alien species. The role also includes engaging with local stakeholders and supporting citizen science initiatives. This position requires strong field research skills, ecological knowledge, stakeholder engagement, molecular ecology familiarity, and excellent organizational abilities.


About the Project





Invasive Alien Fishes (IAF) in particular pose a growing challenge to India's Ramsar-listed freshwater wetlands, threatening native biodiversity and ecosystem health.



This project aims to:


Map and monitor IAF in selected Ramsar sites using non-invasive eDNA methods. Assess dietary impacts of IAF on local species using a meta-barcoding approach. Develop practical management strategies to address IAF impacts. Engage local communities through citizen science monitoring and awareness activities. ###

Responsibilities




Field & Research Activities




Plan and conduct fieldwork, including eDNA water sampling and collection of invasive alien fish specimens where permitted. Ensure proper storage, labeling, and transport of biological samples to partner laboratories. Conduct eDNA and dietary analysis using stomach content or meta-barcoding data Compile, clean, and analyze ecological and molecular datasets. Contribute to writing technical reports, publications, and presentations.

Project Coordination




Lead in track project milestones, deadlines, and deliverables. Support communication between the research team, stakeholders, and collaborators. Assist in organizing project meetings, workshops, and citizen science events. Prepare outreach materials to share findings with local communities and stakeholders. ###

Qualifications




PhD

in Ecology, Environmental Science, Fisheries Science, Conservation Biology, Molecular Ecology, or a related field.

2-5 years of experience

in ecological research, preferably involving aquatic ecosystems or invasive alien fishes.

Relevant publications

in the field of invasion ecology and genetics. Familiarity with field survey methods;

experience with eDNA or molecular methods

is a plus. Strong

data management

and basic data analysis skills. Good written and verbal

communication

skills

. Experience working with

local communities or citizen science initiatives

is desirable. Ability to work independently and in

remote field settings

; willingness to travel extensively within East and

Northeast India

. Strong organizational skills and ability to

multitask across field, lab, and office work
