Position Description Job title: Research Associate (Reid Lab) Employee Group: Faculty Faculty: Medicine Department: Pediatrics This position is located within a health-care facility. Therefore, this position requires successful verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate. All positions in the Department of Pediatrics at BC Children\'s Hospital require a Criminal Record Check (CRC). A pre-employment CRC is required as part of the recruitment process and any offer of employment is contingent pending positive results of the CRC. Job Summary: The Reid laboratory located at BC Children\'s Hospital Research Institute studies the early-life immunology of pediatric leukemia using a range of experimental systems, including transgenic mice, adoptive transfer models, human xenograft models, and ex vivo and in vitro analysis of patient samples and human cell lines. The lab\'s overall research goal is to better understand how the immune system influences the onset and progression of childhood leukemia and to use that knowledge to develop effective immune-based treatment strategies. The successful applicant will be required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner, suited to the proper activities of The University of British Columbia and those governing the activities of the institution. Any procedures or data recorded must be accurate and must reflect the work performed, and will be reported to the principal investigator. Organizational Status: The successful candidate will report directly to Dr. Gregor Reid, the principal investigator, and will work in a strongly collaborative and collegial manner with all project team members to meet research goals and objectives. Work Performed: Design, plan and implement research projects in consultation with the principal investigator Develop cell and animal model systems to study the immunology of pediatric cancers. Perform biochemical and cell culture assays Analyze data and present data in reports, publications, and presentations at group meetings and national and international conferences Contribute to manuscript and grant writing Supervise graduate students and junior staff members with their research projects. Provide technical expertise on project development and experimental design, provide expertise on data interpretation and analysis Other duties as required Consequence of Error: The successful applicant is expected to exercise a considerable amount of judgment, responsibility, and initiative in determining work procedures and methods. He/she should carefully observe and evaluate their work. All works are subject to assessment by Dr. Reid. Consistent poor judgment decisions or errors can result in incorrect data interpretation and potential loss of funding. Supervision Received: The applicant is expected to work independently under the direction of Dr. Reid, who will be available to provide consultation on unusual problems and project developments. Supervision Given: Assist with training graduate students and junior lab staff; provide input on staff/co-op student selection and performance evaluation. Qualifications: PhD and postdoctoral training in cancer biology, immunology or related disciplines Strong publication record Strong research background with experience in animal modeling Demonstrated exceptional analytical, communication and visualization skills This is a full-time position with an anticipated start date from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024.
