The ICU Registrar provides advanced medical care to critically ill patients requiring intensive monitoring and life support. The role involves assessment, diagnosis, stabilization, and ongoing management of patients in the Intensive Care Unit, while ensuring safe and effective communication with the multidisciplinary team and patient families.
Key Responsibilities:1. Clinical Care
Provide comprehensive care to critically ill adult patients in the ICU.
Perform initial assessment, stabilization, and formulation of management plans.
Monitor and adjust ventilator settings, infusions, and other life-support interventions.
Participate in daily ICU ward rounds with consultants.
Ensure accurate documentation of patient status and management.
2. Emergency & Acute Management
Respond immediately to ICU and hospital-wide emergencies (e.g., cardiac arrests, rapid response calls).
Perform advanced airway management, intubation, and resuscitation.
Manage haemodynamic instability, multi-organ failure, and sepsis.
3. Procedures
Insert central venous catheters, arterial lines, and chest drains.
Manage tracheostomies and mechanical ventilation.
Perform bedside procedures including lumbar puncture, thoracentesis, and paracentesis as appropriate.
4. Teamwork & Communication
Work closely with ICU consultants, nurses, respiratory therapists, and allied health staff.
Provide updates and counseling to patient families with empathy and clarity.
Ensure effective handover between shifts.
5. Education & Training
Supervise and support junior doctors, interns, and students.
Actively participate in departmental teaching sessions, simulation training, and morbidity/mortality meetings.
6. Governance, Research & Audit
Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement projects, and research activities.
Adhere to ICU protocols, infection control, and hospital safety policies.
Qualifications & Requirements:
MBBS or equivalent degree.
Postgraduate training in Anaesthesia, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or Critical Care (MD, DNB, , or equivalent desirable).
Current medical registration with relevant council.
Strong skills in resuscitation, airway management, and haemodynamic monitoring.
Ability to work under pressure and in a multidisciplinary team.
Work Conditions:
Rotational shifts including nights, weekends, and on-call.
High-acuity, fast-paced environment requiring rapid decision-making.
