The Quality Engineer/Supervisor will be responsible for ensuring the quality of sheet-metal components, bending operations, welded assemblies, and fabricated parts used in genset manufacturing. This role oversees end-to-end quality control processes, manages inspection teams, and ensures compliance with industry standards and customer specifications.
Key Responsibilities1. Quality Management
Implement and maintain quality systems for sheet metal fabrication and genset assembly processes.
Develop inspection plans, SOPs, and quality checklists for bending, punching, laser cutting, welding, and fabrication operations.
Monitor in-process and final inspection activities to ensure conformance to design specifications.
2. Sheet Metal & Fabrication Quality
Inspect sheet metal components for dimensions, flatness, alignment, and surface finish.
Validate bending parameters, tooling, and machine settings to avoid spring-back or deformation issues.
Evaluate welding quality (visual & dimensional) as per WPS/WPQR.
Conduct root cause analysis for fabrication defects such as cracks, warping, misalignment, poor weld penetration, etc.
3. Genset Manufacturing Quality
Ensure quality of enclosures, base frames, fuel tanks, canopies, and structural components.
Verify assembly accuracy, fitment, fastener torque, and vibration standards.
Support testing team during genset performance and endurance testing.
4. Team Supervision
Lead and guide the quality inspection team.
Conduct training on instruments like Vernier Caliper, Micrometer, Height Gauge, CMM (if available), welding quality basics, and sheet metal inspection techniques.
5. Documentation & Compliance
Maintain inspection reports, rejection reports, and quality documentation.
Manage PPAP, FMEA, MSA, and control plans (if applicable).
Coordinate with design, production, and procurement teams to resolve quality issues.
Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 and other industry standards.
6. Supplier Quality
Inspect incoming sheet metal, raw material, and outsourced fabricated items.
Conduct supplier audits and provide feedback for continuous improvement.
Required Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of sheet metal fabrication processes.
Hands-on experience with bending machines, punching, laser cutting, welding, and powder coating.
Expertise in mechanical measurement tools and GD&T.
Knowledge of genset enclosure manufacturing standards preferred.
Good understanding of quality tools (5S, 5-Why, Kaizen, Root Cause Analysis, CAPA).
Ability to handle manpower and manage inspection teams.
Qualification & Experience
Diploma / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or relevant field.
5-10+ years of experience in sheet metal fabrication quality control (preferably in genset or heavy fabrication industry).
