The Quality Controller ensures that all plywood products meet
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
specifications, internal quality parameters, and statutory compliance required by Indian government norms.
The role involves monitoring the production process, conducting tests, maintaining QC records, and ensuring that defective products are identified and corrected before dispatch.
Key Responsibilities
1. Raw Material Inspection (As per BIS standards)
Inspect
core veneers, face veneers, wooden logs, resin, and chemicals
at the time of receipt.
Ensure moisture content, thickness, and density meet the required specifications.
Reject or report sub-standard material immediately.
2. In-Process Quality Control
Monitor every stage:
peeling, drying, gluing, cold press, hot press, trimming, sanding
.
Check veneer moisture (8-14%), glue viscosity, spreading rate, and bonding strength.
Ensure hot press temperature, pressure, and cycle time match the product grade.
Prevent manufacturing defects such as overlaps, open joints, and delamination.
3. Product Testing as Per Government / BIS Norms
Ensure plywood is tested as per relevant standards:
IS 303
- MR Grade
IS 710
- Marine Grade
IS 1659
- Blockboard
IS 4990
- Shuttering Plywood
IS 1328
- Decorative Plywood
Tests to supervise:
Glue shear strength
Water resistance / Boiling water test
Modulus of rupture (MOR) and Modulus of elasticity (MOE)
Density and thickness check
Adhesion of plies
Nail holding strength
Formaldehyde emission test
Surface finish & squareness
4. Documentation & Reporting
Maintain daily QC logs, test reports, and rejection reports.
Prepare BIS-compliance documents for audits.
Issue Quality Clearance before dispatch.
Maintain calibration records for QC instruments.
5. Compliance & Audit Support
Ensure the factory follows
BIS licensing requirements
for plywood marking.
Support internal and external audits (BIS, Pollution Control Board, Labour Department).
Ensure safety & environmental compliance in chemical handling.
6. Coordination
Work closely with Production, Dispatch, Purchase, and R&D.
Communicate defects and suggest corrective actions.
Follow up to ensure process improvements are applied.
7. Finished Goods Inspection
Inspect final boards for thickness, density, flatness, bonding strength, and surface defects.
Ensure proper grade stamping, branding, and batch traceability.
