Key skills & knowledge

Strong

gemmology knowledge

(often GIA, IGI, SSEF, or equivalent training) Deep understanding of

colour grading

and market pricing

Negotiation and relationship-building

(Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, Colombia, Africa, etc.) Ability to spot

commercial vs high-jewellery quality

Source gemstones

such as sapphires, rubies, emeralds, spinel, tourmaline, garnet, etc.

Evaluate quality

: colour, clarity, cut, carat weight, origin, and treatments.

Negotiate prices

with miners, dealers, cutters, and international suppliers.

Ensure consistency

for collections (matching stones, calibrated sizes).

Manage inventory

and align purchases with design, sales, and market trends.

Verify certification & ethics

(heat/treatment disclosure, responsible sourcing).
