is responsible for overseeing daily forging operations in the hand tools manufacturing unit, ensuring production targets, quality standards, safety requirements, and cost objectives are achieved. The role involves supervising manpower, machines, and processes related to hot forging, trimming, and preliminary shaping of hand tools.
Key ResponsibilitiesProduction & Operations
Supervise and coordinate all forging activities including heating, forging, trimming, and normalizing processes.
Ensure production targets are met as per the daily and monthly plans.
Monitor machine utilization, cycle times, and downtime to improve productivity.
Ensure correct setup and operation of forging hammers/presses and furnaces.
Quality Control
Ensure forged components meet dimensional and metallurgical specifications.
Monitor defects such as cracks, laps, underfills, and scale issues.
Coordinate with Quality department for inspections and corrective actions.
Ensure adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions.
Manpower Management
Allocate work to operators and helpers as per skill levels.
Train operators on safe and efficient forging practices.
Monitor attendance, discipline, and performance of the forging team.
Maintain a positive and productive work environment.
Safety & Compliance
Enforce safety standards related to high-temperature operations and heavy machinery.
Ensure use of PPE and compliance with safety procedures.
Report and investigate accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
Maintain housekeeping and 5S standards in the forging area.
Maintenance Coordination
Coordinate with maintenance team for preventive and breakdown maintenance.
Ensure proper care and timely replacement of dies, tools, and fixtures.
Identify recurring machine or die issues and suggest improvements.
Cost & Waste Control
Reduce material loss, scrap, and rework.
Monitor fuel, power, and consumable usage.
Support continuous improvement initiatives to reduce manufacturing costs.
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain production, rejection, and downtime records.
Prepare shift reports and communicate issues to management.
Support audits and compliance requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
Diploma / ITI / Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
5-8 years
of experience in forging operations, preferably in the
hand tools industry
.
Strong knowledge of hot forging processes, dies, furnaces, and trimming operations.
Skills & Competencies
Strong leadership and team management skills.
Practical knowledge of forging defects and corrective actions.
Understanding of safety standards in forging environments.
Basic computer skills (MS Excel, production reporting).
Problem-solving and decision-making ability.
