The Challenge
We're looking for a talented and passionate Principal Software Engineer to join a geographically distributed agile product team. You'll design and build scalable, resilient, high-performance backend systems that power OneTrust's global privacy and trust platform. This is a hands-on role with exposure to modern technologies and technical leadership opportunities-designing critical systems, defining architectures, and influencing our platform roadmap.
Your Mission
As a Principal Software Engineer, you will:

• Lead the design and implementation of high-availability, scalable, and performant systems using Java, Spring Boot/Spring Cloud and RESTful APIs.
• Architect and deliver backend frameworks and services oriented to multi-tenant, resilient, and secure production environments.
• Utilize your deep expertise in SQL and NoSQL databases to design data models, optimize queries and support large-scale data operations.
• Develop and enhance real-time, message-driven systems (Kafka, streaming) and containerised/cloud-native environments (Azure, AWS, GCP).
• Own technical leadership: write code, review pull-requests, mentor engineers, guide architectural decisions and foster learning across teams.
• Monitor system performance, proactively identify bottlenecks, and implement improvements to ensure scalability, reliability and efficiency.
• Stay ahead of emerging technologies and industry trends and drive innovation and best practices within the team and the organization.

You Are
You're someone who understands both the benefits and challenges of micro-services, cloud-native architectures and enterprise-scale production systems. You collaborate closely with Product Managers, Architects and Designers to align technical work with business objectives. You're comfortable tackling sophisticated software development tasks, staying current with technologies, and driving change in the way systems are built and delivered.
Your Experience Includes

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical or business field.
• 8+ years (or more) of full software development lifecycle experience in Agile environments (Scrum, XP, Pair Programming).
• Proven experience designing and building complex, scalable systems, with a strong understanding of system design and software architecture patterns (micro-services, event-driven, distributed systems).
• Strong hands-on programming skills in Java, RESTful services and the Spring ecosystem, with solid knowledge of version control, testing and CI/CD pipelines.
• Advanced expertise in both SQL and NoSQL databases including schema design, query optimisation and performance tuning.
• Experience designing and maintaining Kafka-based real-time messaging systems or similar streaming architectures.
• Experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred, or AWS/GCP), containerised environments (Docker, Kubernetes) and preferably Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
• Demonstrated technical leadership: mentoring engineers, making architectural decisions, and raising the bar for engineering excellence.
• Exceptional problem-solving, strong analytic skills, and ability to communicate complex technical concepts to varied stakeholders.

• Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field.
• Track record running web services at global scale, high availability and large user volumes.
• Expertise with Kafka, Elasticsearch, advanced observability/monitoring tooling, and performance testing frameworks.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted developer tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT) or other productivity/automation tools for engineers.
• Previous experience in enterprise SaaS companies or large-scale cloud platforms, driving architectural evolution and technical strategy.
