Position Objective:




The Policy Associate (Southern Region) will spearhead initiatives to advance PETA India's mission to protect elephants in captivity across southern India. This includes advocating for the replacement of live elephants with mechanical alternatives in cultural and religious settings and campaigning for the rescue and rehabilitation of elephants. The role also involves supporting regional activities such as cruelty case interventions, rescues, youth engagement programs, school outreach, street-theatre demonstrations, and other advocacy efforts. This position requires close collaboration with multiple PETA India departments -including Cruelty Response, Legal, Youth, Campaigns, and Media -and demands exceptional communication skills, organizational precision, and the ability to manage complex situations. The ideal candidate will excel at influencing key stakeholders, including temple management, government officials and law enforcement.

Key Responsibilities




Lead campaigns to replace live elephants with mechanical alternatives in cultural and religious contexts. Coordinate efforts to rescue elephants from abusive or illegal captivity. Identify temples housing elephants- especially those that are sick or illegally held- and work toward their rehabilitation by offering alternatives. Collaborate with government authorities to advocate for policies that phase out captive elephants and promote animal-free alternatives. Support cruelty case investigations and rescues within the southern region. File FIRs with local police and ensure rescued animals are transferred to sanctuaries. Organize and execute public demonstrations, awareness campaigns, and events to educate communities about animal rights and cruelty prevention. Conduct humane education workshops, talks, and interactive activities to inspire compassion for animals among youth and encourage community involvement. Troubleshoot and resolve on-ground challenges related to PETA India's animal protection efforts, providing timely recommendations and solutions. Serve as the media spokesperson for PETA India on matters related to southern India. Perform any other duties necessary to achieve PETA India's objectives, including engaging with additional stakeholders as required.

Required Skills & Qualifications




Degree in a relevant field Minimum four years of relevant experience, preferably in the animal welfare sector in South India. Proven ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders. Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Malayalam (knowledge of additional languages is an advantage). Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and related software. Excellent organizational and negotiation skills, with persistence and attention to detail. Ability to handle emergencies and sensitive situations with professionalism and maturity. Flexibility and a proactive approach to problem-solving and operational coordination.
