Job Description

Multiple Effects (Stages):

Usually 2 to 7 effects. The first stage uses external steam; subsequent stages use vapor from the previous stage.

Pressure Gradient:

Operates under decreasing pressures to allow boiling at lower temperatures in each effect.

Economy of Steam:

A major benefit--1 kg of steam can evaporate more than 1 kg of water across multiple effects.

Types of Flow Arrangements:

Forward Feed:

Liquid and vapor move in the same direction.

Backward Feed:

Liquid moves opposite to vapor; better for viscous solutions.

Mixed/Parallel Feed:

Combination, used for special applications.
Main Components:

Steam chest or calandria (heat exchanger)

Evaporator bodies (effects)

Vapor separators

Condensers

Vacuum system
