Roles and Responsibilities of a Planning Engineer

Project Planning & Scheduling

Develop project baseline schedules using tools like MS Project/Primavera. Break down project scope into Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). Define activity sequences, durations, and resource requirements.

Monitoring & Progress Control

Track project progress against the baseline schedule. Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports. Identify slippages and delays, and recommend corrective actions.

Resource Management

Plan manpower, materials, and equipment requirements in line with the schedule. Monitor resource utilization to avoid underuse or over-allocation. Assist in material forecasting for procurement planning.

Cost, Billing & Budget Control

Support project cost estimation and budgeting activities. Prepare and verify

client billing

based on approved measurements and progress. Check and certify

sub-contractor billing

against site records and work done. Monitor cost versus progress and highlight potential overruns. Prepare cash flow forecasts based on project schedules.

Coordination & Communication

Coordinate with project managers, site engineers, QS, and other departments. Liaise with clients and consultants for schedule updates and approvals. Present progress updates and highlight risks to senior management.

Risk Management

Identify schedule risks and prepare mitigation strategies. Conduct delay analysis and provide Extension of Time (EOT) justifications when required.

Documentation & Reporting

Maintain updated project schedules, billing logs, and planning documentation. Provide variance analysis (Planned vs. Actual progress). Support preparation of project completion and closing reports.
