Responsibilities

Drawing blood

: Safely draw blood from patients using proper techniques and equipment

Preparing patients

: Explain procedures to patients, and comfort those who are nervous

Labeling and storing samples

: Accurately identify, label, and store blood samples

Transporting samples

: Safely transport blood samples to laboratories for testing

Updating patient records

: Enter patient and sample data into computer systems

Sterilizing equipment

: Clean, prepare, and sterilize equipment used for drawing blood

Taking other measurements

: Take blood pressure, pulse, and respiration readings

Applying bandages

: Apply bandages after drawing blood

Sending samples to the lab

: Send blood, urine, or fecal samples to the lab for testing

Skills and traits

Attention to detail

: Ensure accurate sample collection and labeling

Communication skills

: Interact with patients of various ages and backgrounds

Patient care skills

: Be empathetic and compassionate to help patients feel comfortable

Understanding of medical terminology

: Understand anatomy, physiology, and the purpose of different blood tests

: Remain calm and professional in stressful situations
