The Pharmacy Manager oversees the daily operations of the pharmacy to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant delivery of pharmaceutical services. This role includes supervising staff, managing inventory and budgets, ensuring regulatory compliance, and providing high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities1. Operational Management
Manage daily pharmacy operations, workflow, and staffing schedules
Oversee prescription processing, dispensing accuracy, and customer service standards
Implement and optimize pharmacy systems, policies, and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
2. Leadership & Staff Management
Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate pharmacists and pharmacy technicians
Provide coaching, performance feedback, and ongoing staff development
Foster a positive, collaborative workplace environment
3. Clinical & Patient Care
Ensure accurate and safe dispensing of medications
Provide patient counseling on prescriptions, medication therapy, and OTC products
Oversee immunization services and other clinical programs, where applicable
Address drug-related issues, interactions, and therapy concerns
4. Regulatory Compliance
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local pharmacy regulations
Maintain proper record-keeping for controlled substances, inventory, and audits
Prepare for and support inspections by regulatory bodies
5. Inventory & Financial Management
Oversee ordering, receiving, storage, and control of medications
Manage inventory levels to minimize waste and prevent out-of-stocks
Monitor financial performance, including budgeting, profitability, and cost control
Implement strategies to grow pharmacy revenue and enhance operational efficiency
6. Customer & Stakeholder Relations
Address patient concerns and resolve issues promptly
Collaborate with healthcare providers, insurance companies, and vendors
Promote patient safety initiatives and quality improvement programs
QualificationsEducation & Licensure
Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Pharmacy (BSc Pharm), depending on region
Active and unrestricted pharmacist license
Additional management or business certifications (preferred)
Experience
Typically 2-5+ years of pharmacy experience (retail or hospital)
Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred
Skills
Strong clinical knowledge and dispensing expertise
Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
Ability to manage workflow and prioritize tasks efficiently
Proficiency in pharmacy management systems and technology
Strong understanding of pharmacy laws and regulations
Work Environment
Retail, hospital, or specialty pharmacy settings
Includes supervisory duties, direct patient interaction, and administrative responsibilities
May require evening, weekend, or holiday hours depending on location
