The Head of Pharmacy oversees all pharmacy operations within the hospital, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant delivery of pharmaceutical services. This leadership role requires strategic planning, team management, and collaboration with clinical and administrative stakeholders to optimize medication use and support high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
Direct day-to-day pharmacy functions, including inpatient, outpatient, and emergency dispensing.
Develop and implement policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure regulatory compliance (e.g., DCGI, NABH).
Manage inventory control, procurement, and budget to maintain optimal stock levels and cost-effectiveness.
Clinical Collaboration
Partner with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide drug-related consultations and optimize therapy.
Lead medication-use evaluations, antibiotic stewardship, and adverse-event reporting initiatives.
Oversee formulary management and therapeutic substitution programs.
Team Development
Recruit, train, and mentor pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and support staff.
Conduct performance reviews, set goals, and foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
Ensure adequate staffing levels and develop contingency plans for seasonal or emergency demands.
Quality & Compliance
Monitor compliance with local regulations, hospital accreditation standards, and internal quality metrics.
Lead internal audits, implement corrective actions, and prepare for external inspections.
Maintain accurate records of controlled substances and ensure secure storage and disposal.
Strategic Planning & Reporting
Contribute to the hospital's strategic planning, budgeting, and capital-investment decisions related to pharmacy services.
Prepare regular performance reports (e.g., key performance indicators, cost savings, service metrics) for senior leadership.
Identify opportunities for service expansion (e.g., clinical trials support, specialty pharmacy, telepharmacy).
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) required; Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) or Master's in Pharmaceutical Sciences preferred.
Licensure & Certification:
Registered Pharmacist with state pharmacy council.
Additional certifications (e.g., Board Certification in Pharmacy Management, PGD in Hospital & Clinical Pharmacy) a plus.
Experience:
Minimum 8-10 years of progressive pharmacy experience in a hospital or large healthcare setting.
At least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
Skills & Competencies
Strong leadership and people-management abilities.
In-depth knowledge of Indian drug regulations, hospital accreditation standards, and quality-assurance processes.
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in pharmacy management software and electronic health-record systems.
Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment and drive change initiatives.
