The Pathology Technician supports the pathology laboratory by preparing, processing, and analyzing biological specimens. The role includes assisting pathologists in the examination of tissues, operating laboratory equipment, maintaining accurate documentation, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities
Receive, label, and accession biological specimens accurately.
Assist in gross examination and dissection of tissue specimens under the supervision of a pathologist.
Prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination, including fixation, embedding, sectioning, and staining.
Perform routine and special stains in accordance with lab protocols.
Operate and maintain laboratory instruments such as microtomes, cryostats, and autostainers.
Maintain proper storage and tracking of specimens and slides.
Prepare slides and documentation for pathologist review.
Ensure compliance with laboratory safety guidelines, biosafety procedures, and regulatory requirements (e.g., NABL, CAP, CLIA if applicable).
Maintain accurate records of tests performed, reagents used, and quality control data.
Assist in inventory management of lab supplies, reagents, and equipment.
Support quality assurance activities and participate in audits or inspections.
Communicate effectively with clinicians, lab staff, and administrative teams.
Education & Experience
Diploma / Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT / BMLT) or equivalent.
Certification or training in histopathology preferred.
1-3 years of experience in a pathology or diagnostic laboratory (freshers may be considered depending on facility).
Knowledge of histopathology techniques and laboratory best practices.
Ability to operate lab equipment such as microtomes, cryostats, and staining machines.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Good organizational and time-management skills.
Understanding of biosafety and hazardous material handling.
Basic computer skills (LIS, MS Office).
Ability to work independently and within a team.
