This position is part of the Legal Team providing support to Beckman Coulter Diagnostics R&D organizations located in Miami, Florida, (U.S.) and will be a fully remote role. As part of the Legal Team, you will work to ensure the development and protection of the Intellectual Property portfolio for Beckman Coulter Diagnostics. The Patent Agent will report to Senior Counsel, Intellectual Property, and will be responsible for supporting the Hematology and Urinalysis businesses. In this role you will have extensive interaction with R&D, Program and Product Management, and software and algorithms teams. The particular role is responsible for protecting intellectual property, staying abreast of competitive and industry technologies, clearing our technologies for freedom to operate. The particular groups the Patent Agent will be supporting are doing significant new product development in the medical diagnostic space and this will be a fantastic opportunity to get in on the ground floor of some new technologies and aid in crafting protection strategies around key innovations. This position would be fully remote, and be able to work afternoon shift (around 12 PM-9 PM) to overlap at least partially with the working hours of our U.S. based R&D and legal teams. • Generate invention disclosures with inventors; document trade secrets and implement trade secret protection strategies
• Conduct freedom to operate reviews of new technology; conduct patent searches \xe2\x80\x93 patentability, freedom to operate, invalidity
• Review competitive IP in the business space
• Conduct software-related reviews, including documenting AI-related inventions and conduct open source software clearance activity
• Manage active patent prosecution and new patent filings, including claims drafting

The essential requirements of the job include:

• Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in a scientific field - preferably a computing-related discipline (e.g., computer science or computer engineering or related), or significant experience in the computing space
• At least 5 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience is a patent agent
• Strong software and computing related experience, competence in machine-learning is a plus
• Strong aptitude and understanding of patent law and patent prosecution, especially in core markets (U.S., Europe)
• Excellent verbal and written English skills as your clients will be mostly based in the U.S. and much of the work will involve reviewing written material (patent claims, patent applications)

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

• Biomedical/medical diagnostic industry
• Computer/software engineering
