The PACS Administrator is responsible for the daily management, support, and optimization of the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) within a multi-hospital environment. This role ensures timely and secure access to medical imaging and radiology reports across facilities, supports radiologists and clinicians in diagnostic workflows, and maintains compliance with healthcare regulations. A strong understanding of radiology terminology, imaging modalities, and reporting systems is required.
Key Responsibilities
System Administration:
Maintain, configure, and troubleshoot PACS and related imaging systems (RIS, Voice Recognition, etc.).
Ensure system uptime, image availability, and integration with EMR/EHR systems.
Manage user accounts, roles, and access permissions in PACS.
Clinical Support:
Work closely with radiologists, technologists, and physicians to ensure imaging workflows are optimized.
Provide training and support to clinical staff on PACS usage.
Validate radiology reports and imaging data integrity.
Integration & Interoperability:
Support HL7, DICOM, and IHE integration standards.
Ensure seamless communication between imaging modalities (CT, MRI, Ultrasound, X-Ray, etc.) and PACS.
Collaborate with IT teams on interface development and troubleshooting.
Quality Assurance & Compliance:
Monitor system performance and implement regular QA checks.
Ensure compliance with HIPAA, Joint Commission, and other regulatory standards.
Maintain audit logs and support security/privacy requirements for patient health information (PHI).
Project Management:
Lead PACS upgrades, migrations, and vendor coordination.
Participate in system evaluations and recommendations for new imaging technologies.
Develop policies, SOPs, and documentation for PACS operations.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Healthcare IT, Computer Science, Radiologic Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
Minimum
3-5 years of PACS administration
in a hospital or healthcare setting.
Strong knowledge of
radiology terminology, workflows, and reporting systems
.
Hands-on experience with
DICOM, HL7, IHE standards, and EMR/EHR integration
.
Familiarity with radiology voice recognition/reporting tools (e.g., Nuance, Powerscribe).
Experience with multi-hospital or large healthcare network PACS preferred.
Excellent problem-solving, communication, and customer service skills
