Position Title: OT Technician
Department: Operation Theatre / Surgical Services
Reports To: OT In-charge / Nursing Superintendent / Medical Superintendent
Job Summary:
The OT Technician is responsible for preparing and maintaining the operation theatre, assisting surgeons and anesthetists during surgical procedures, ensuring sterilization and availability of instruments, and maintaining adherence to aseptic techniques and hospital protocols for smooth and safe functioning of surgical operations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Pre-Operative Duties
Prepare the operation theatre before surgery (cleanliness, sterilization, and arrangement of equipment).
Ensure availability and proper functioning of surgical instruments, anesthesia machines, and other OT equipment.
Verify the patient's identity, surgical site, and procedure as per safety protocols.
Assist in shifting and positioning of patients on the operation table.
2. Intra-Operative Duties
Assist the surgical team by passing instruments, sutures, and other necessary items.
Maintain sterile field and follow strict aseptic techniques.
Monitor equipment during the surgery and report any malfunction immediately.
Assist anesthetist during induction and monitoring of anesthesia.
3. Post-Operative Duties
Assist in safe transfer of patients to recovery room/ICU.
Clean and sterilize instruments after surgery and prepare for next case.
Maintain stock of consumables and instruments in the OT.
Ensure proper disposal of biomedical waste as per hospital protocols.
4. Administrative / Record Keeping
Maintain records of instruments, OT supplies, and sterilization.
Assist in maintaining case records, checklists, and OT registers.
Report any shortages, breakages, or discrepancies to OT In-charge.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
Diploma / Degree in OT Technician or relevant paramedical qualification.
Knowledge of surgical instruments, sterilization techniques, and OT protocols.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to work in emergency situations and under pressure.
Strong sense of responsibility, discipline, and infection control awareness.
Experience:
0-2 years for Junior OT Technician.
3-5+ years for Senior OT Technician (experience in multi-specialty OT preferred).
Working Conditions:
Rotational shifts including nights, weekends, and emergency calls.
Exposure to biohazardous material and infection risks (with protective measures).
