The Operation Theater Technician is responsible for assisting medical professionals during surgical procedures, ensuring a sterile and safe environment, and providing necessary equipment and support before, during, and after surgeries. This role requires excellent attention to detail, a strong understanding of medical instruments, and the ability to work well under pressure in a high-stakes environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Preparation of the Operating Room:
Ensure the operating room is fully equipped and sterilized before the procedure. This includes setting up necessary surgical instruments, drapes, and supplies.
Assisting Surgeons and Medical Team:
Assist the surgical team by passing instruments and supplies during surgeries, positioning patients, and monitoring patient safety.
Sterility Maintenance:
Maintain a sterile field during the operation to prevent infection. Ensure all instruments are sterilized and ready for use.
Instruments and Equipment Handling:
Handle, clean, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring everything is in proper working order for each procedure.
Patient Preparation:
Assist with preparing patients for surgery, including assisting with positioning and draping.
Surgical Assistance:
Assist surgeons by holding instruments, sponges, and other items during the surgery as needed.
Post-Operation Duties:
Assist in cleaning and sterilizing the operating room after procedures, and help with patient transfer to recovery rooms.
Documentation:
Ensure accurate documentation of all materials used during surgeries, as well as any incidents or changes that occur during the procedure.
Qualifications:
Education:
Completion of a recognized surgical technologist program or relevant healthcare-related qualification.
Certification:
Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) from an accredited body (e.g., National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting).
Experience:
At least 1-2 years of experience working in an operating room or a clinical surgical setting (preferred).
Skills:
Knowledge of surgical instruments and their uses
Strong attention to detail and precision
Ability to maintain composure in high-pressure situations
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Familiarity with sterilization and infection control procedures
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for extended periods and assist in patient handling as needed.
