Job Title: Orthopedic OT Assistant (Joint Replacement)
Role Summary:
The Orthopedic OT Assistant provides high-level technical and clinical support specifically for joint replacement and musculoskeletal surgeries. You will manage specialized orthopedic equipment, ensure meticulous sterile field maintenance, and assist surgeons as a primary technical aid during complex arthroplasty procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Specialized Setup
: Prepare specific orthopedic instrument sets (reamers, drills, trial implants) and advanced imaging equipment like C-ARM or robotic surgical systems.
Intra-operative Assistance
: Act as a "Surgical First Assistant" under surgeon supervision--passing instruments, assisting with wound retraction, and helping in the opening/closing of surgical sites.
Implant Coordination
: Manage the inventory of joint prostheses (hip/knee components), ensuring the correct sizes and types are sterile and ready for the "trial" phase of surgery.
Sterilization Oversight
: Lead the sterilization process for heavy-duty orthopedic trays using high-pressure autoclaves, adhering to 2025 infection control standards to prevent surgical site infections (SSI).
Patient Positioning
: Execute complex patient positioning required for joint access (e.g., lateral decubitus for hips) while ensuring the safety of skin and nerves through proper padding.
Post-Operative Technical Tasks
: Assist in the application of specialized orthopedic dressings, splints, and casts immediately following the procedure.
Documentation
: Maintain digital operation theatre records, including instrument counts and National Joint Registry (NJR) data entry.
Qualifications & Skills
Education
: Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology (DOTT) or B.Sc. in Surgical Technology.
Experience
: Minimum 2+ years of experience in an orthopedic surgical setting, specifically with joint replacements.
Technical Proficiency
: Expert knowledge of orthopedic power tools (oscillating saws, bone drills) and robotic-assisted surgical platforms.
Physical Requirements
: Ability to handle heavy instrument trays and maintain physical stamina for surgeries that may exceed 3-4 hours.
Certifications
: BLS (Basic Life Support) certification and current healthcare worker immunization status.
