Job Title: Shift Operator/Shift Engineer - 400 kV Substation
Department: Operation & Maintenance (O&M)
Location: North GOA
Reporting To: Shift In-Charge / Substation Manager
Position Summary: The Shift Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable
operation of a 400 kV substation during their assigned shift. This includes monitoring and
controlling substation equipment, ensuring adherence to operational and safety protocols,
coordinating with Load Dispatch Centers (SLDC/RLDC), and responding effectively to system
disturbances, alarms, and faults.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Substation Operation & Monitoring:
Operate all high-voltage equipment (up to 400 kV) including Circuit Breakers, Isolators,
Current Transformers (CTs), Potential Transformers (PTs), Lightning Arrestors,
Busbars, and Reactors.
Monitor substation parameters like voltage, current, frequency, power factor, and load
flows via SCADA/RTU/HMI systems.
Ensure timely switching operations as per standard operating procedures (SOPs) and
permit-to-work (PTW) systems.
Follow single-line diagrams (SLDs) and log switching activities in the shift logbook.
2. Shift Duties and Log Maintenance:
Maintain detailed shift logs: equipment status, load readings, alarms, faults, and any
abnormalities.
Handover/takeover shift duties properly with detailed briefings on system status and
ongoing work.
Report major disturbances, faults, or incidents immediately to Shift In-Charge/Control
Room.
3. Fault Response and Troubleshooting:
Respond to tripping, alarms, and protection relay indications quickly and safely.
Carry out initial fault diagnosis and isolation.
Coordinate with maintenance teams for restoration and testing.
4. Safety & Compliance:
Strictly follow Lockout-Tagout (LOTO), PTW, and safety isolation procedures.
Ensure all operations are in compliance with CEA regulations, Indian Electricity
Rules, and safety norms.
Maintain housekeeping of control room, switchyard, and battery rooms.
5. Communication & Coordination:
Coordinate with SLDC/RLDC for load flow management and switching approvals.
Interface with protection, SCADA, maintenance, and other utility teams during fault
restoration or scheduled outages.
Escalate any abnormal conditions to the control center and record actions taken.
Required Qualifications:
Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Minimum 3-5 years of hands-on experience in shift operation of 220 kV/400 kV
substations.
Familiarity with SCADA/RTU systems, relay panels, and high-voltage equipment
operation.
Key Skills and Competencies:
Proficiency in substation equipment operation (CBs, Isolators, Transformers, etc.)
Knowledge of SCADA, Protection Relays, Interlocks, and SAS systems.
Understanding of grid codes, protection systems, and emergency restoration procedures.
Ability to work under pressure and respond to faults efficiently.
Strong communication and documentation skills.
Commitment to safety and adherence to procedures.
