As the NPD & Costing Engineer will be responsible for managing and overseeing the development of new products from concept to production. This role requires a hands-on approach and a deep understanding of mechanical engineering, manufacturing processes, and project management.
Duties and responsibilities
Lead and manage the development of new products, ensuring they meet customer requirements and company standards.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including design, production, quality, and supply chain to bring new products to market.
Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, and design reviews.
Create and review engineering drawings, specifications, and 2D models using CAD software.
Perform simulations and analyses to validate designs and ensure manufacturability.
Develop project plans, timelines, and budgets for NPD projects.
Track project progress, manage resources, and ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
Work closely with the production team to ensure smooth transition from development to manufacturing.
Optimize manufacturing processes to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
Implement and maintain quality control processes for new products.
Conduct root cause analysis and corrective actions for any product issues.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and projects.
Prepare
cost estimation and quotation
for new projects (RFQs) based on BOM, manufacturing process, and tooling.
Analyse
material cost, process cost, manpower, overheads, and logistics
to develop detailed cost sheets.
Benchmark cost with suppliers and market rates to ensure competitiveness.
Develop
cost models
for different manufacturing processes such as machining, casting, forging, or plastic components.
Monitor and control costs during development to ensure product profitability.
Estimate and review
tooling, fixture, and gauge
costs required for new projects.
Coordinate with the
purchase/vendor development
team for supplier selection and cost negotiation.
Support supplier in
process development
and validation activities.
Propose design and process improvements for cost competitiveness.
Support localization and alternate material sourcing efforts.
Maintain NPD documentation in line with IATF 16949, APQP, and PPAP requirements.
Qualifications
Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical/Production Engineering, Manufacturing field. Master's degree is a plus.
Proven experience in new product development and project management within a machine shop or manufacturing environment.
Strong knowledge of machining processes, CNC & VMC machining, and production equipment.
Familiarity with quality control methodologies and standards.
Excellent project management and leadership skills.
Proficiency in using project management software and tools.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
