The NICU Staff Nurse provides specialized nursing care to neonates requiring intensive medical attention. This role involves monitoring neonates, assisting in medical procedures, ensuring safety, supporting recovery, and promoting the overall well-being of newborns in the NICU.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
Admit, transfer, and discharge neonates as per hospital protocols.
Monitor and record vital signs accurately.
Perform sample collection, drug administration, and insertion of IV cannulas.
Conduct Ryle's tube feeding, stomach washes, and catheter care.
Administer oxygen therapy, neonatal resuscitation (NALS/CPR), assist in intubation, and manage CPAP/HFNC.
Provide immediate newborn care, including weighing, bathing, and umbilical cord care.
Care for neonates undergoing phototherapy.
Support feeding for babies with cleft lip/palate and other sick or preterm neonates.
Care for high-risk neonates on ventilators and monitor critical parameters.
Administer blood component transfusion therapy under supervision.
Accompany neonates during transport for procedures or investigations.
Assist in resuscitations in NICU and labor room.
Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
Procedural Assistance
Assist doctors during lumbar puncture, pleural tapping, arterial line insertion/removal, and umbilical venous catheter insertion.
Support and guide mothers with breastfeeding.
Ensure strict aseptic technique and hand hygiene during procedures.
Patient Monitoring & Documentation
Monitor neonates using advanced equipment (multipara monitor, ventilator, CPAP, HFNC, infusion/syringe pump).
Maintain accurate nursing notes and patient records.
Perform pain and nutritional assessments, and provide hygiene and comfort care.
Conduct wound care and dressing changes as needed.
Equipment Handling
Proficient in operating and maintaining: Thermometer, BP apparatus, NIBP monitor, Glucometer, Pulse oximeter, ECG machine, Nebulizer, Defibrillator, Syringe and infusion pumps, Phototherapy unit, Baby warmer, Ventilator, HFNC, Blender O?, CPAP machine, Crash cart.
Infection Control
Actively work to reduce Hospital-Associated Infections (HAIs).
Attend mandatory training in infection prevention and comply with all relevant protocols.
Adhere to the organization's infection control policies, including hand hygiene and aseptic techniques.
Communication & Coordination
Collaborate with the maternity and NICU team to ensure continuity of care and enhance patient experience.
Communicate sensitively with families, including delivering difficult news when necessary.
Maintain accurate and legible care records as per organizational policies.
Report incidents, complaints, or accidents, and support investigations.
Note:
When NICU patient load is low, nurses are expected to assist in Ward and OPD areas as required.
Qualifications & Skills
GNM / B.Sc. Nursing (Registered with State Nursing Council).
Minimum 2 years of experience in NICU/PICU settings.
Certification in NALS/CPR preferred.
Strong clinical knowledge of neonatal care and emergency management.
Excellent observation, critical thinking, and teamwork abilities.
Proficiency in handling medical equipment and maintaining documentation.
